Thinning the Stynylrez primer

Hello everyone! I tried to follow the instructions from Stynylrez (Ultimate for the UK) but my airbrush (cheapo Chinese) don't like how thick it it's even with a .5mm needle.

Does anyone have a thinning ratio that works well? I tried but all I got was basically grey water!

Any advice is great thanks

Hi Matt

First off what pressure are you spraying at? This maybe where your problem is.

You should have no problem what so ever with .5 needle. If you really do have to thin, then I would recommend no more than 10% of Ultimate Thinner

With a .5mm needle struggling I'm going to guess its a fault with the brush or the brush isn't properly cleaned. Have you given the brush a good stripdown and clean ?

I have sprayed Stynlrez out of my cheap Master G-22 airbrush just fine, its a .3 needle if I'm not mistaken and I just up the pressure to between 25 - 30 psi and it does just fine. The one and only issue I have had, is a little bit of tip dry, but that can easily be cured by having a damp paper towel on hand to wipe the tip occasionally.

Yes the brush was stripped down and cleaned prior to use.

Sadly I have a compressor where I cannot set the pressure.

Most likely that's the culprit but since I lack in funds for a new one I needed to know what ratio to thin it.

So pretty much (if my math don't fail me) it's a drop of thinner for every 10 drop of primer correct??

I love the primer don't get me wrong that stuff is amazing I know the mistake( or lack of correct tools) is on my side

Last night and as you can see I most likely got the thinning ratio wrong. Also note how the compressor just keeps going. (Sorry for the bad video quality)

Without being able to control or even know what the pressure is, I would recommend that you get one that does ASAP. You will find that your airbrushing, especially your control will improve vastly almost immediately.

I started of with a cheap £60 job from ebay that did me great for a year or two until I was ready to step up to a bette quality one. Definitely worth the investment...

You could just buy a regulator /moisture trap combined and insert it into the line where the AB line screws onto your compressor. you can always use it on your next compressor later.

Matt, I am not sure of your budget and I can appreciate as much as the next guy, how important it can be to do so. In my case, I had a compressor that I could not adjust the pressure on, I went to TCP Global and picked up the TC-20 by Master. It isnt the glamorous or fancy name you see kicked around, but for around $60 US, it works like a charm for me. I am able to control the pressure for various paints and includes the moisture trap. I have not had any issues with mine at all and I've had it for over a year now. Just an idea.

thanks for the info! I was looking also at harbor freight tools they have one just like yours for sale but is a tad more expensive. I will look into your idea better!

That compressor looks like the TC-16/AS-16 which has a max pressure of 30psi but its working range is 10psi to 30psi so you could be spraying anywhere between that.
