AirFix Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vb 1:72 gone wrong

Hi all,
First post
I have recently got to do the airfix 1:72 spitfire mkvb, however when doing the wash it appears to have gone really wrong, see images below.
The wash i used was the vallejo Model Wash for dark vehicles
The wash was applead to a layer of vallejo gloss varnish
I would assume that I have either applied the wash to think and its eaten away at the gloss varnish
Is there any fix for this?
how can I prevent this in the future?
