time to for my first build log on ISM
Normally I am world war two armor and infantry fan but my guilty pleasure is the Strkyer APC family man are they sexy machines. So I thought it would be a good place to start by adding the engineer squad vehicle (ESV) with surface mine plow by AFV Club to my small by growing collection

This is my first AFV kit of the Strkyer having built two of Trumpeters offering (the RV & MEV) I'm looking forward to seeing how this one builds up in comparison. Construction begins with the bow plate and the mounting bracket for the plow, this was a fiddly process as the locater pins for the brackets are shallow and fragile but after a little messy glue job i got it in place (had great fun cleaning the glue marks after)

then it was on to the suspension which went smoothly though it was a bit fiddly at times, had to be very careful not to snap anything as i went, but this what i got done in a evenings work

thanks mate, they really are nice looking vehicles with a lot of scope for modelling and dioramas,
Ill dig up the two stryker's if you like one of them complete while the other, the medical vehicle is waiting on wheels but is all weathered up

Finally a Stryker!!! I wanted to see one of these on here for ages. Glad to see it was the one I was looking at. You gotta tell us the differences so far between the two companies are. I'll be watching closely on this thread.

As long as we're doing it, I wouldn't mind to jump into the mix of stryker builds. We might just have another group build to contend with.

Looking good so far. I will be looking forward to seeing the full build up.

Nice build on the Stryker. Just to let you know that Lenny mentioned in one of his vids about using a Fibre-Glass pen to remove excess glue from kits without damaging the plastic

NovYank - from what i can tell so far, is that the AFV offering boasts a high level of detail and some items that are not included in the Trumpeter kits such as the drivers IR camera for night driving, however their is a bit of flash and some heavy mold lines on some parts, where as trumpy kits suffer from a lot of pin marks on inner surfaces hatches ect. Both are good in my mind

Those were terrific Shane. Even without wheels they still rock.
I've seen probably 10 or so of these in every model show that I've been to, they're very popular to build.
Now I know what they're called.
I know very little about modern AFV's, now I know what a Stryker is.
And what they're supposed to look like when well modelled.

they are a very striking vehicle and kinda remind me of the German 8-rad series so it was an instant winner for me, and also I loved the concept of them as being a totally self contained combat unit which lends itself well to diorama ideas

That's a great comparison... I don't know why I didn't think of that before... You're right though.
The 8 Rads and the Strykers sometimes served similar roles... hell the even sorta look the same.
The 8 Rads, half tracks, and Strykers all would have hundreds of diorama possibilities because of the nature of their class.

Coen - hahahaha I'm often described as a bad influence :p
But I have to agree that 8- rad and half tracks and their modern siblings are full of great ideas, I had an idea for a large scale diorama involving a German armored Recce unit in the field featuring the 8 - rads and maybe the 222's armored cars. that is for later, i'm only looking into the research for such a build at the moment

but I think the Idea of a side by side work log is a damn good idea

Bank is not an issue my friend lol. I've been wanting to do something like that for a while, and my interest in modern armor makes the Stryker a valid candidate.

I saw the video, that's why I thought of the joke. If there's a way I can sneak a joke into something...I will...I guarantee it.

Nice builds in the pis mate. AFV Club produce good models, if my memory
serve's me correctly

bdr65, they do make good kits, but one thing i've noticed is that you must gentle when removing parts as the plastic is very delicate

haha, that wasn't in the memory........... Iam workin on a Bronco kit and same issue with some of there parts, simply
because they are fairly delicate plastic. Otherwise happy as Larry with it.

havent tried Bronco kits before must give one a build some time

Quick update

got a little done last night and today in between study breaks for an exam tomorrow morning :s

but got the wheels assembled, they have some nice detail and together well with six parts a wheel, there are some small parts that require a little care but other than that they went together without a hitch

Hi All,

quick update,

Firstly got my German exam out of the way so its a big relief off my chest

on the build front I mounted the lower and upper hulls for ease of construction though the instructions call for the hulls to be joint at the end of the build but I can see this being a problem as the damage to small parts would be too great

Here's what progress I've got done today,

According to the instructions, your meant to add the upper and lower hull half's till step 33, I however mounted mine after step 10, my reasoning for this is done to the mass of small parts that are mounted to the upper full in the steps in between the recommended step is too likely to result in the many parts snapping so I opted to mount it now

also did some work on the side panels of the upper hull (step 11) went together very well and was pleasantly surprised by how well the side bin went to together (step 12) normally with the trumpy kits the stowage bins are normally a bit of a pain to get right, but not on this kit

I've decided that next year will be a modern armour year for me. I might start by doing the MBTs currently being used by the super powers.

hope your all having a good weekend, managed get some more work on the wagon today, while me and my mate discussed the news while I worked in the shed

So I took norms advice and placed the side panels on the superstructure before I mounted the stowage bins and tie down points. I also mounted the top panel, she is being to look like a Stryker now and ant she a beauty !

didnt do much work on her yesterday spent the day trying to paint up so more Napoloenic Infantry for my slowly growing Black Powder French and Russian armies so I can have a game but its a long and soul destroying task....so much detail to paint !!

just a quick update, no better way to spend a Friday night then with a nice cuppa and good smooth tobacco burning in the pipe and a nice model sitting in front of you
So what have I done thus far ? Well not all that much had a bit of rough week so didn't get all that much done this week. But I've cracked open the box and dove back into the kit with renewed vigor


hopefully by tomorrow evening I'll have a proper photo update to show with you
