So I’ve decided it’s time that I build an AFV, never built one before so this should prove “interesting”.



I thought I’d start with a “basic” kit and the Tamiya Hanomag Sdkfz251/1 looked a reasonable kit to me. The kit itself has © 1973 moulded into the lower body so I’m guessing the kit is over 40 years old, about the time I stopped making models first time round so I can treat this as a “new mould”?

On researching the kit the general consensus seems to be that its a “bit boring” and greatly benefits from home additions so I’ve got the Eduard PE set, Value Gear universal tents & tarps set 3, Reality in Scale German 75mm short ammo boxes and a couple of Tamiya “detail-up” sets German jerry can set (early) and German Infantry weapons.

I don’t plan on doing a dio’ and therefore I’m not sure that I’ll build the soldiers included in the kit as figure painting looks like a serious “dark art”, I’ll see how I get on with the rest of the build and then decide.

I’ve yet to decide on a camo’ scheme, the kit suggests either a dark grey or a desert yellow, both of which seem a bit to bland, I seen some yellow, green and brown versions that I quite fancy, I’m not looking for accuracy just something thats a bit more interesting than just a plain scheme.

Great kit, lovely fit as its a tamiya, nice detail aswell enjoy

As mentioned earlier I’ve got an Eduard PE set (35432) for this kit as, in my research, I’d read that the kit’s details are a little “basic” and can be greatly enhanced by this accessory set.

The PE set has the instrument panel so the moulded version needed to be removed


You can also see the PE foot pedals and clasp on the round case. There is also a radio set that has a frame folded around it, this didn’t turn out as well as I’d hoped, this was my fault as I’ve not used much PE, 99.9% of the aircraft PE I've used didn't require bending, and I’m not sure what the order should be to fold this correctly to get really tight creases?


The PE set also includes printed dials, so I’ll paint this separately, attach it to the plastic and then mask it to protect the dials.


Storage boxes have PE handles and clasps added

Hi John are you building the 251/8 ambulance if so you are ok, but if not the 251/8 ambulance was the only one to fit a water tank between the front seat's,sorry to be the bringer of bad news,I maen its up to you want to leave it in or not.

thanks for the info Pete, this is my first AFV so I'm not going to be too bothered by the accuracy ...

... so the story is that these guys needed something to keep their "found" brandy in and this was the obvious vessel - so basically their on a "pub crawl"

there are clips to be “bent” in a dozen different ways for each of the tools, it took me about ½ an hour to do this first one, there are at lest six more to do but well worth the time, also there is a replacement shovel blade…



I’ve primer’d the instrument panel, it’ll take a day or so to fully cure and then I’ll paint the top colour and add the printed instruments before adding it to the fire wall.

Still a fair bit of PE to add, currently I’m thinking that I’ll build and paint the inside and then move on to the outside.

here you can see the “before and after” of applying the PE catches


this is the MG shield, so much thinner…



This is the firewall and instrument panel painted and lightly weathered, still some chipping needed.




I’ll attach this to the “main body” after I’ve completed the rest of the interior, PE, paint and weathering still needed.
This is my 1st AFV, so anyone who's made this kit before how did cope with the detail painting, did you build everything and then paint or did you do the same as I have?

I have fond memories of building that kit when it was still a brand new release (1974?). No photo etch back then. Have fun!

I built this kit about as you say 40 odd years ago, I was in my teens. It does make a very nice kit as I recall.

there's a lot of PE, my fault I wanted to use it but I'm really enjoying the challenge and change (I normally build 1:48 aircraft)

This should be the last of the “internal” PE.








I used the fantastic Black Ultimate/Stylenrez as the primer, a couple of coats were needed to fully cover the PE






I’m going to let that cure for 12-24 hours, depending on how impatient I get, and then I’ll paint and weather the interior.

So I’ve finished the “main” build of the inside, I now need to add some of the additional stuff, weapons, boxes, tents and tarps.
The weathering has come out far heavier than I really wanted, I used matt varnish rather than gloss varnish, so lesson learned.



I’ve painted the Brandy (water) barrel mig 018 Cremeweiss and the bench seats Tamiya XF-64 red brown. They look a bit pristine so I’ll be weathering them however, they will have a lot of “stuff” on them, guns and tent/tarps so I don’t think too much of it will be visible?


I think I’ll add a dot filter to the sides as these look a bit too clean, my only concern is how to manoeuvre the brush behind the PE panels as I'll have to "push" the brush down rather than "dragging".



I’ve primer’d, Ultimate grey, all of the “kit” thats going inside, the 2 larger tent/tarp rolls will be hung on the outside.
I’m not sure about the mines, I think they may be “overkill” I’ll see what they look like once everything else has been put own place.

The helmet, rifles and MP40 are all “kit parts”, the MP44, ERMA submachine gun, antitank, stick grenades, tellermines and ammunition boxes are from the Tamiya Germany Infantry weapons set.

Now I need to twiddle my thumbs until the primer cures and I’ll then paint that little lot and then close up the top and bottom, placing some of these “extra’s” would be too difficult afterwards

Time to add the “extra’s” before nailing the top and bottom together.
These are the items I’m going to add to the interior, the helmet and MP40 were included in the kit, all other items are from the Tamiya Germany Infantry weapons set


Only the smallest tarp and tent roll will be inside, the larger two will be strapped to the outside of the vehicle


The inside with all of the bits’n’pieces fitted (I didn’t use the mines)

I had a bit of fun joining the top and bottom, I’m guessing that some of the PE got in the way as I find it difficult to believe that Tamiya makes an ill fitting kit!?

Now I can fit the outside bits, even more PE, and prepare for paint

Some holes needed filling as I’ve used the PE tool latches rather than the ones moulded onto the kit parts


PE added to detail various parts of the exterior


I’m not sure how long the mud flaps are going to stay on as I’ve knocked them off 3 times already! and don’t get me started on the clasps for the side boxes…



I've managed to snap the wing mirror arm thingy, I didn't realise I am such a klutz


I’ve used some packing foam to protect the interior and applied a coat of Ultimate black primer



I’ve also sprayed the elastic plastic tracks


I’ll need to let the primer cure before I start on the camo’ it’ll give me a couple of days to decide on the scheme

Just a small update, I’ve painted the base colour of the camo’ scheme, mig RAL 7028 Dunkelgelb



and the wheels, seems an awful lot of them


the plastic/elastic tracks were give a coat of Mr Metal Color iron 212


Next will be the other two colours for the camo and “hand painting” the rubber on the road wheels

You really brought back a real old kit, and made it look awesome. Great stuff John. German vehicles are such a pain, just because of all those damn wheels.

I've made-up the camo', no idea how accurate, I'm guessing not remotely white-tac sausages were used to delineate the colours and give a 'soft-edge' for the camo.



the first of the two camo’ colours, RAL 6003 Olivgrun opt.2 MIG-002



the next colour, RAL 8017 Schokobraun MIG-015




the plastic/elastic tracks Mr Metal Color iron 212 were buffed


I need to touch-up a few bits of the camo, overspray and just look wrong, then I’ll make a start on the weathering, chipping etc.

I wanted to work on the chipping, I was reading Tat2bhoy’s build log in the I Heart Tamiya GB

where he showed a chipping technique using a lighter paint with a darker paint on top giving a 3D effect, Tat2bhoy’s version is “just right”, although my technique needs work but I’m reasonably pleased with what I’ve done…






Now I’ll wait for the gloss coat to dry and then (finally) get some weathering done

Time to add a dot filter/map.
The oils are a set from the pound shop, I’m sure that Abteilung Oils or Windsor and Newton would give better results but these’ll do for now.
Colours used, white, green, yellow and brown…



After a few minutes I “removed” the oil dots with a brush lightly soaked in odourless turpentine using downward strokes.




Its almost magic the way weathering streaks are left behind, if you’ve not tried it, please do, if I can do it anyone can!

Once that had dried I added other oil colours, light-brown and orange, to try an simulate rust streaks








Then I added a Tamiya panel line accent color (dark brown)




Next will be a flat coat and then some Ultimate washes, not sure which ones yet but probably a mixture of light, dark dirt and sand.

Well that finished a lot sooner than I thought.

I fitted the machine guns, extra stowage and elastic/rubber band tracks (I really don’t like them at all!)

The rear-view mirror and supports have been put away somewhere for safety, so needless to say I can’t find them now, I’m sure they’ll turn up eventually? so until I find those broken pieces I’m calling this done.
I think the tyre’s and tracks would probably be better if I applied some mud but as I don’t have anything to create that effect I’m going to leave them as is.
This is an “old” kit, early 70’s, and I think has been enhanced by the Eduard PE set, some of it anyway. The tool clasps were fiddly but really worth doing, its a shame that the PE set is two clasps short so the tyre lever? is just the kit part. I’m not overly convinced by the internal stowage bins, I’m guessing that there should be some bottoms to them however they do add some interest to the sides, next time I think I’ll only put them on one side.
The Tamiya weapons set also adds extra interest to the inside, and I’ve still got most of the set left over for a future build?
Value Gear tarps and tents resin is well worth the money, I’ve used 3 pieces and have 13 pieces still to use. I really like them hanging off the side of the vehicle, they just add that little something extra?

So this was my first AFV kit, I “made up” the camo’ scheme, based on other vehicles but I’ve no idea if this type of vehicle was ever painted in this type of scheme?
I’m really pleased with the chipping effects, and the dot filter came out far better than I’d imagined, I re-did some of the “rust” streaking (maybe overdid?) as the flat coat really toned them down.

I’ll defiantly be doing other AFV builds, I’m currently looking at Tamiya’s 1:32 Matilda, as this was their 300th release I’m assuming that it’ll be a nice kit, plus its a British tank and I do like the desert camo’ scheme.
