1/350 Aircraft Carrier

Post by JPease1972 »

Does anyone have experience building a carrier of this scale? I am planning my next project which I am anticipating building the Trumpeter USS Nimitz and converting it to either the Carl Vinson or Theodore Roosevelt.

I am looking for info on what to expect, any flaws, upgrades that aren't readily known, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I think it really depends on the level you are aspiring too.

I built the Tamiya 1:350 Enterprise years ago and it was a lovely kit. I built it out of the box with an additional aircraft set and was well pleased with it. Flaws wise, there weren't any, it went together beautifully and had a level of detail I really liked.

However, compared to some completed models (especially recently) it looked really bare. There is so much PE after market out there for ships in this scale now that you can really go to town on a carrier. I've also seen scratch built hanger decks too which are awesome.

The PE costs a small fortune so you've got decisions to make cost wise. As mentioned, I guess it all comes down to how detailed you want to make it.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Thanks for the info. I did pull the trigger on the ship itself but have a ton of research and other supplies to buy. Sounds like I will have some scratch building to do so I will have to get some lessons in that area.
