Tamiya (14115) Yamaha YZR M1 Valencia 1/12

Post by minster »

Hi Guys, I'm going to try my first upload of multiple photos hopefully giving you some idea of how this bike was built :eeek:
Photos all taken with an old Samsung fone camera so please forgive the blurriness of some.
First the box:

A start on assembling and priming the bodywork first:

Motor, Frame etc comes after bodywork:

Picture are a bit small I see now that they are loaded :bash:

This bike was a real joy to build, no major issues (Not even with decals)
I would recommend it to any one :th:
Critique or questions always welcome

Very nice finish, I like the carbon on the exhaust and the rivets.is that the kit chain or a aftermarket one?

Thanks for the kind words:)
Tay99, Just the kit chain, painted with Alclad steel, a bit of gold and a wash after dotting all the rivet ends with x11. Carbon on exhaust comes with kit.

Did the decals go on as normal or did you use Microsol.

Yes I used both Microset & Microsol on almost every decal apart from on the windshield.
They definitely help to give that 'painted on' look and greatly assist where there are irregular surfaces to cover.
Microsol softens the decal a lot so care has to be taken once it is brushed on:)

Thanks John:)
I have built the 1/6th scale HD Police Bike & the HD Fat Boy and while they look nice I do prefer the extra care and detail you get with the 1.12th scale series. 1/12 scale give more value for your money IMHO

yeah, the 1/12 are better value for money and take a lot less room to display but i do like the 1/6. Like yourself i've built a few of them in the past and i'm about to build the HD fat boy for the tamiya GB, and i have to say i'm really looking forward to that !
If i could only have one type of model to build it would be the tamiya 1/12 bikes no question !

John,
Here's a quick pic of the Harley Davidson Fat Boy Lo 1/6th scale that I built earlier.
Might give you a few tips on what not to do

Oh blue ! TS-51 ?
Looking through the kit there are two areas that concern me with painting 1, the cylnder hea fins, do i paint them silver first or black and 2, the x-18 in the centre of the wheels. I spray everything apart from the smallest bits.

This is the Harley you are referring to I assume?
I painted the fins totally with the black and when dry, carefully ran a silver paint pen around the edges of fins. Not sure if thats how it should be done but worked for me.
The wheels I left as they were stock but masked off the outer rims and sprayed the centres x18.
Tank color is Alclad Candy Apple Indigo and took me about 5 attempts to get right.
Hope that helps :th:

Yeah, thats the Harley. I never thought about a paint pen :thumb1: i bought a tamiya one (X11) for my daughter last year, i'll need to ask if she still has it.
I'm hoping to make a start a week or so from now, i'd appreciate any input you have. I know the group build is a four month time span but the clock is ticking !
I was going to do the yamaha midnight special but looking at the detail parts for the harley they can be added easily after the build is complete.

Try this link for a lot of build step pictures: Not my build but are very well done by the builder.

http://s1344.photobucket.com/user/danie ... 0.jpg.html

I painted the harley frame using Alclad Gloss Black base, came out very nice but needs a while to cure properly before handling. (I would use Aqua Gloss to protect the black and gives it a great shine.
Actually the Harley Build was easier for me than the Midnight Special I did (Like yours above)
That was my first big bike build and I had bad decal-ling problems due to inexperience :bash:
Good luck with the build & happy modeling mate :th:

Haven't any photos of that one and have given model away to my son.
