(Another) Toyota Hiace Quick Delivery 1:24

Hi all!!!

My entry on this build will be this Toyota Hiace Quick Delivery van, 1:24 scale.

For a Tamiya GB, I thought this would be appropriate, a Tamiya delivery van made by Tamiya. I will not go as far as Lysus and propose myself to build it using only Tamiya products, but will be very close to that!

First, the kit.
A big box doesn't mean you'll have a lot inside; 2 big sprues, 1 clear parts sprue, the rubber tires, 2 small sheets with decals, 1 paper sheet with the boxes to be loaded on the van and the instructions. Doesn't sound a lot, but there's everything there and, checking the instructions, doesn't look like it will be a simple building.
The first sprue has all the chassis parts, wheels, front part of the body and inside details.

The second sprue contains the remaining parts of the body.

There's a few ejector pin marks, but for what I've seen, once they will not be (clearly) visible once the parts are assembled. Still, I may consider to fill these.
The clear parts are spot on, no signs of scratches or any flaw.

The rubber tires are well detailed, but, as always, there's some seam lines on the thread pattern. A little bit of sanding should do the trick.
Two small sheets of decals with loads of different decals will give you the option to finish the model in whatever way you may want.

Typical Tamiya instructions, very clear and easy to follow. However, I'll have a good look at them, as I think some of the steps might be swapped just in order to be easier for the assembling/painting process.
Finally, a small treat, a paper sheet with the boxes to be assembled and loaded into the van.

About the paint scheme, I'll be pretty much following the instructions and paint it white (Tamiya TS26 Pure White Gloss). Yep, I'll give a go at the rattle can, just to see how it goes. Or I might airbrush it with X2 White Gloss. I'll decide it later. (Yeah, I'm not planing that ahead!!! )
For the decoration, I'll go for the simple decoration that is shown on the box, with the Tamiya logos only. As always, I have a cunning plan about the decoration that I might had later on, but I'll leave that for later on!!!

Now, about the Toyota Hiace Quick Delivery van.

"The Quick Delivery was introduced in September 1982 as a walk-through van. Specially developed to satisfy a parcel delivery company's request for "a van in which delivery men could work standing up", the vehicle came in two models, the Hiace Quick Delivery (with the payload capacity of 1.25tons) and the Toyace Walk-Through Van (1.5tons).
The Hiace Quick Delivery utilized the low-floor chassis of the Hiace Just-Low, on which a tall 1-box van body was mounted. As a result, 1785mm tall cargo room was created with walk-through acess to the driver's seat. The Hiace Quick Delivery later changed its model name to Quick Delivery 100. The Toyace Walk-Through Van used the front body of the Toyace Aluminum Van without modification, while connecting the cabin to the cargo room to allow walk-through access. The height of the cargo room was 1800mm.
In December 1985, the 2tons Dyna Quick Delivery and Toyace Quick Delivery were added to the lineup.Their body tipes were the same as that of the Hiace Quick Delivery, although they were both a size larger. These 2tons models later changed their names to Quick Delivery 200. A 4-wheel drive model was added in October 1987."

First update on the Hiace.

Started today with the chassis, (almost) everything primed (with Stynylrez Grey) and already managed to paint some parts (Tamiya X18 semi-gloss black).
The wheels are primed aswell and ready for paint.
Already have some parts from the cabin waiting for primer.
The instructions call for the chassis to be painted all in Semi-gloss Black (Tamiya x18) but it seems to me a little bit boring.
I'm considering to give it some life, maybe the exhaust system and the engine underside will be painted in a different colour, aluminium (xf16) or gun metal (x10)...

Also started to take a look on the body and plan how to paint it and assemble it... I have mentioned about some ejector pin marks before, but now I'm realizing how ridiculous this is!!! Basically, there's ejector pin marks everywhere inside the body, in the cabin and doors!!!! Hello, putty, my old friend!!!...

And if you think this is a lot, I present you the inside part of the ceiling!!!!
As this is in a not very visible part, I'll leave this as it is. But still, not cool, Tamiya, not cool...

Upadate #2 for the Hiace

Yesterday was a productive day and managed to finish the chassis, painting and assembly. As I said on the previous update, the chassis looked boring, painted only in semi-gloss black (X18). So, I decided to give it a go and painted the engine, exhaust system, transmission and parts of the suspension in flat aluminium (XF16). I like the result, and even if it isn't 100% faithful to the original, at least it looks much more interesting than having everything in black.
All the chassis parts painted and ready for assembly.
Spare wheel, forward and rear suspension and transmission in place.
Wheels ready to be assembled. I might detailed the wheels later on, maybe paint the bolts and wheels caps in black...
And wheels in place!!! There's a small touch up required on the rear spare wheel, to be dealt later on.
I'm thinking aswell to wheather it a bit, maybe after gloss coat, some Ultimate dark dirt on the engine and suspension...

The cabin bits and bobs are already primed (once again, Stynylrez Grey) and hopefully should be ready on the next days.
The body inside ejector pin marks have been dealt with (Perfect Plastic Putty), and today they should be ready for priming. The only part I'm not bothering to deal with the ejector pin marks it's the rooftop: they're too many and very hard to access for sanding. I'll leave as iy is, and hopefully they won't be that visisble once the body is fully assembled.

As I'm planing to build the van with the rear doors opened, a small surgery was required.

It's funny we both decided not to just go all semi-gloss black underneath. I'm wondering if they were just like "I dunno, make it look like a toy" when it came time for call-outs.

Splendid start! I might try and avoid looking at this--tempting though it may be--until I get farther along just so I don't contaminate my decision process. I want to see where we both end up using our respective methods. Best part, we're doing the same markings, so it should be cool to compare.

The funny thing is that I never seen this kind of van in Portugal, only in movies or TV, so building this feels like discovering a brand new world!!! Different feelings, the same will for modelling!!!

When I started this, and after realising you would be doing exactly the same kit, I was considering exactly the same: would we be doing exactly the same, would the progress of one us influence the decisions of each other, would the final product look exactly the same or a completely different kit? Then I just thought that different backgrounds, different level of experiency and skill and different tchniques can only lead to a different final result. So, yeah, should be fun to see how the completed kits might, or might not, be similar. Totally understand if you'll try to avoid to take a look on my progress, I reckon I'm not that brave, so I'm following your progress, always keeping in mind the basic plan I drew for myself!!! Anyway, thanks for the encouragement and good luck with your build!!!

Update #3 for the Hiace

After 2 weeks away on holidays, time to get back to the Hiace!!!
The interior is almost completed, with all the instrument panels, seats, driving wheel and other bits and bobs painted and ready for the assembly.

The instrument panel is completed with 2 decals, easy enough.

The seats were a bit tricky. The instructoons called it to be painted with a mix of Orange (X6), Flat Base (X21) and Flat Earth (XF52). The final result has a texture that seems more like brick dust rather than leather. Still, I think that a coat of Aqua Gloss might change this and give it a proper leather look.


The base of the body is 99% completed and almost ready for assmebly.

The side panels of the body are halfway through the interior painting process.
Once again, the instructions call for a mix of coulours in order to paint the load cabin, in this case Flat Flesh (XF15) and Flat Earth (XF52)... Sometimes I feel I'm cooking a magic potion rather than building a model!!!

The next few days I'll be trying to finish the side panels and rooftop (at least the interior) in order to start the assembly process. Still, I haven't decide if I'll paint the exterior parts individually or if I should assemble everything and paint the outside body after it. What I decide is that I'll be attaching the clear parts before painting and mask them for the painting, as I think this is will be easier than doing it the other way around.

Upadte #4 for the Hiace

A few more things done and completed in the last days. It has been some busy days, masking and unmasking in order to get some details painted on the windows. And yet, it's not over!!! After much consideration, I decided to paint the outside body each part individually and then assembled the body: in that way, if I make a mess I don't need to strip the paint from all the body, but only from that specific part. Also, I decided to attach the clear parts, mask them and paint the body with the clear parts on: I believe this way is easy to mask the windows "rubber" detail, that is already painted in flat black (XF1).

So, the side panels and rooftop inside parts are finished, painted and gloss coated (Alclad Aqua Gloss).

The clear parts are already in place and will serve as a support for masking the black detail on the windows. The door handles and sliding door rail are painted aswell and will be masked for the white (X2) painting.


The doors inside parts are painted and clear parts attached aswell. The same with the windshield.

The outside still has some details to mask and then will be painted in white (X2).


Some more parts are painted or on the process to be painted: the rearviewmirrors, front bumper, front and rear license plates and front grill are painted and ready to be assembled, while the front body part is primed, masked and wayting to be painted.

The load cabin grills are finished aswell and ready to be assembled.


Finally, the instrument panel, driving wheel and seats are gloss coated and finished, just wayting to be assembled. I was not very happy hoe the seats paintjob came out, but I have to admit, after the gloss coat, they really look good, almost like worn-out leather!!!

I might give a pin wash just to bring out the details, using Ultimate dark dirt wash.

Update #5 for the Hiace

Well, it has been some busy days modeling and the Hiace it's quickly on its way for the final reveal!!! Painting is almost done and already clearcoated some parts (Alclad Aqua Gloss)so tomorrow I can start with the decal process.

Finally, the cabin inside and chassis were treated with a wash (Ultimate Dark Dirt) just to "dirt" it a little bit.



If everything goes ok, tomorrow I'll do all the decals (it's just a handfull of those) and then I'll go for the "special livery" that I'm planning for the Hiace.

Update #6 for the Hiace

Oh boy, I really got carried away on the last few days!!!
On the last update, all the body parts were already gloss coated and ready for the decals. Only 10 decals, should have been a very straight-forward process. It wasn't. Most of the decals went on with no big issues, but the ones on the side panels were an absolute pain to settle... Still I wasn't happy with the result...

On the right side was almost perfect, but still there was some bubbles trapped under the decal, no matter how much I tried to get rid of those with cotton buds or the amount of MicroSol applied...

On the left side, it was a disaster... On my efforts to try to get rid of the air bubbles trapped under, the decal started to rip appart!!! In the end, is not very visible, and I'll try to weather all the body so i can hide it, or at least make it less noticeable.


After the decal session, I started assembling everything. That's when I really got all excited and when I noticed, I had the seats, instrument panel, driving wheel, side panels and the load cabin grills already in place!!!

The front part of the body is completed, with the decals and front grill and head lights


The rear load cabin doors are ready as well and will be the last thing to put in place.


Finally, while the clear coat and decals were settling down, I've done this nice extra that comes with kit: the boxes to be loaded in the van. All cut, folded and glued and ready to be loaded and delivered to your door!!!

Update #7 for the Hiace

Final assembly is on its way. The front windshield was a little bit fiddly, mainly because I didn't want glue fogging the clear parts and also because the paint in the glueing points didn't allow the parts to glue properly. Besides this, everything settled down properly without any big issues. As a proper Tamiya kit!
I have to say, was probably a bad call to paint the body before the assembly process: some seams could have been dealt properly if these parts were assembled before painting. But what's done is done and this serves as an experience for the future.
As I still have to finish some details for the "cunning plan" I have for this van, this will be the last update before the final reveal. It's still missing the rear and side door to be placed, these will be placed in last place. After finishing my "cunning plan", I'll give it another clear coat (Alclad Aqua Gloss), a wash (still to decide if I'll go for a pin wash or full body wash) using Ultimate washes, maybe dark dirt, and a final coat, probably another clear coat.

I'll leave you some photos of the progress so far and hopefully in the next days I'll be able to do the final reveal.

This is great! I can't believe it took me this long to finish, and frankly I should have read up on yours since I ran into the SAME conclusion about the build order. Like, a person NEEDS to do some serious filling and sanding, especially for the roof/windscreen join, but then that makes the paint difficult to do. I did it in the same order and I think we're both like...why, Tamiya, WHY?

And AND! I had the same catastophe with one logo decal. Though, I must say, yours look a THOUSAND times better than mine. I think the Mark Fit might have been lacking for the task. Though I did have some Decal Adhesive, it's scary sticky and considering how one decal went to bits on me I didn't want to push my luck. You, on the other hand, handled it like a pro!
