The Length of ISM Group Builds - You decide....

A quick poll to see what length the majority of people would like to see the main ISM Group Builds...

Initially, we were going to do 4 monthly main group builds, which gave us three a year. We then changed it to 3 monthly to squeeze another GB in. The problem is now that as the forum grows different people want to do a few different GBs and SiGs, we don't want people to feel that they HAVE to complete a model and feel pressured into doing that as it could turn it into a chore instead of fun. Trying to get four models completed in a certain time frame is not pleasant and really negates the reason why most of us model....

Anyways, we leave it in your, the members, hands to decide how long and how many GBs a year we have. If you want to give a reason you're welcome to do so, but it's not a requirement

I think 4 month 3 GB's a year is perfect, not too much to take on and plenty of time to complete.

Yes we may have said 3 months originally and I understand those that have already completed their build may feel differently, but this is a new forum and we will be evolving as we grow, so things may change along the way.

For now I think 3 months is about perfect for a GB but as we grow we have the option to increase the time frame it would be harder to reduce it if need.
Plus I think 4 models a year is possible and people don't have to enter every GB so with having 4 a year people have more choice in which ones they want to enter.

But what I don't agree with is that the current GB be changed. I think perhaps this first one should be left at the 3 months, and used as much as anything, as a learning experience. We did one at 3 months, found it wasn't long enough or whatever, and changed it for future ones.

That would be my suggestion, yes go with 3 4 month GBs a year, but let this first one end as advertised, and apply the new length to the next one.

I suppose I'm lucky and have the time to get lots of modelling done.

I can see that others don't and a long build would be better for them.

I voted for 3 month builds as I enjoy them and the more the better for me.

I'd say 3 months for a group build with a 1 month heads-up. I think 3 months is enough time, but then again, school and football for me might make that time a crunch. That's okay for me, I enjoy the chaos.

I think that 3 month GBs would allow more topics to be covered plus add some variety. Like Nige said, not everyone has to enter every group build.

I'd vote for 3 months, with pleanty of heads up, like NovYank said above (we have had that with the ww1 SIG). Maybe just put a limit of only so many running at any one time?

just one question - I understand from the constuction of poll's options that the GBs will not / should not overlap ? In such case option 3 months + 1 month for advertising before would be fine.

I vote for 4 - 3 months builds also from another reason, as someone told - we are not obliged to enter all GBs and from other side, if we find that some GBs are not for us from any reason we can still have 2 or 3 more to do in the year. For example - I have never built (not talking about painting ) any figure and the availability of Sci-Fi models on Polish market is not good, so in such case I would miss 2 of 3 builds in a year. Of course I'm not here only to "compete" in GBs, but I really enjoyed the first GB and I'm looking forward for any in the future.

I'd have to go with the 4 and 3 choice as well.
I'd have to also agree with the wiggle time for set up and kit acquisition. So some promotional time ahead of the build might help.
And as Gav said, I don't think that there's a need to change the current ones, lets just work on the next ones.
Growing pains and all.
The format is sound and very enjoyable... just some tweaks is all that's needed.

4 months is good for me.
It means builds that dont take me as long give me time to work on other builds, for myself, other forums, or my local club.
That is assuming each one is entered which is unlikley but they are a great way to make you take a kit from the stash, or buy a new one from a genre you normally wouldnt buy.

I do agree with the builds not overlapping where possible.
And at least a month's notice of the upcoming builds so we have time to save $$, order kits/aftermarket parts or supplies would be preferable as it takes quite a while to get decent stuff shipped over here to NZ.

4 months for me.....
Gives us 16 weeks...... Plenty of time to submit a half decent build to the GB while managing our own builds and dropping in on GB's if like me you were undecided , should / or shouldn't I ?
I also think that ISM being such a friendly, open modelling community will no doubt still drop in some occasional "quick timed builds" caption comps and the continued monthly draws, promoting local businesses like e-models and encouraging members to shop with them.
The quick builds idea being an after thought as the larger builds plod on giving members who are not in it to enter something and possibly encouraging others to join the forum...
My thanks and best wishes for the future of ISM to all involved. Paul, Lee and the moderators keep the forum running smoothly. Well done guys.

I voted for the 3 month long/4 GB's a year for only simple reason - I've only done one GB so far in my life but I've come to realise that if the GB ran for a month I'd finish in a month, if it ran for a year I'd finish in a year!

Good point.
I think that I'd do the same, since I don't have to work I can almost offer employment levels of work time to my hobby.
But for most folks it's more about the feeling of deadline, pressure, and stress.
This is a hobby... = anti pressure, stress, etc.
Too tight of a schedule is bothersome to most.

If I didn't have emodels videos to do as well videos for ISM, 3 months would be fine, for me that extra 4 weeks makes all the difference.

I like the idea of 4 months, it allows a bit more time for a more complicated kit etc, Plus, the sig builds will also add more options for those that finish the GB early, or are not participating in a particular GB so there is a pretty good chance that a group will be running (either GB or SIG) that one can join if they wish. Just my thoughts.....
