Well, after the cock up on the Colonial Viper I decided to make a start on old JD....

I cut off all the parts from the resin block and washed them, sanded them up as there were a few bits of flash and filled a few holes in the resin. Nothing too taxing really. Then had a dry fit whilst deciding how I'm going to put him together and what colours I'm going for...




His shoulder guards and head are completely separate so, I've decided to do them as individual items and them glue them together at the end. I'm not sure whether to do the same with the torso and legs as they're separate as well...

Love the detail on this figure....




I think this is the look I'm going to be aiming for, but just tone the blue down on his suit and make it darker (nearer black)....

Wow nice detail should look really cool when finished.


By the way what happened to the viper?

Well the pros paint them unassembled... I can't understand why.
I'm doing mine assembled and he's got more nooks and crannies than good ol'JD there. I'd say do it assembled if it were me.

You used to be able to shoot Welshmen, but you had to do so with a longbow from within the walls of Chepstow castle. The legislation changed within the last 20 years or so. We love medieval laws that hadn't been repealed

I normally build it all then paint it.

And depends on the figure really if their are going to be lots of hard to reach places then leave in sub-assemblies.

Does look like you'd have any issues building it all first with this one though .

Next question: What colour primer to use? Grey, black, white or something else?

I just did mine in grey, I immediately saw two seams that I needed to go back over.
I think that white would probably do the same, but with less contrast.
Black would be good for the shadows though.
My second coat will probably be a thin coat of black.

Id use black on dreed as mostly dark colours and the shading is already done for you.
Plus this will darken the colours used on top and give a nice grim look to him

It is a cracking figure of the good Judge

I prime with Vallejo black and then undercoat with Tamiya white paint (instant shadows and highlights) - I then take a photo to remind myself what goes where. This gives a best of both worlds approach - black to ensure the darkest shadows are truly dark (but black can suck the life out of bright colours) and white to ensure the bright lights zing!

A photo explains it better (it assumes a lighting source of directly above). I picked up this technique from an inspirational blog of seriously good work...http://figurinepassion.blogspot.be/p/tutorial-2.html (have a look at the 2013 gallery too, you might see something of interest!!!!)

Managed to get a little done in the mancave today and in between things did a little work on JD...


First off, I made a few stands. Something I've seen all the figure builders use. Knocked some up with a little wood and some clipped paper clips. Not sure if this is right but hey-ho....






I then drilled small holes in the feet and accoutrements of JD and fixed the paperclips in the with just a spot of CA. The seem to be nice and solid and good to work on. Again, not sure if this is right bey hey-hoo....lol






Hopefully, I'll get the primer on tonight after I've fed the snakes

Those blocks look great to me, as long as they make it easier for you to paint and hold the figures parts then it doesn't matter if they are ''correct''

Nice lee, but aren't the VDE cutters a little ott for paper clips.

Well that was stupid, I was referring to the fact that they are VDE electrical cutters

That's pretty much how the pros do it Lee.
After I got mine all together I began to think that it might have been a good idea.
I'm not taking him apart now though. I'll just watch yours. haha.

If you get this months Airfix model world magazine you will find a figure build of this kit, if you dont want to get the kit i maybe able to scan the pages for you. it gives you all the colours used etc

Yep - Already have it Glen. I like it, but it's not the look I'm going for and his methods seem to be backwards to everything I've picked up so far....lol

It does look good when finished though doesn't it? Going to make up a special display case for all my 2000AD figures

Black base is down... Going to try the method Rob recommended a couple of pages back

It will probably work out best that way. Shading might be easier.

DC87 is doing an interesting series of how-to's for laying on the paint that I'm going to give a whirl.
It's time consuming but it keeps the paint nice and thin.
I figured since we've got 6 months I've got time to learn a new skill haha.

It does Rob - Tempted to just paint the boots and gauntlets green and paint the face and be done with it....lol
