Another Tamiya 1/32 mosquito build !

Post by Johnj »

I suppose this is technically my second entry but i'll do this first as it's a much bigger build, it'll be the biggest kit i've ever built !
I'll be aiming to get this done by december 1st, that gives me a month to do the Harley.

I think i counted 24 sprues. To stand any chance of getting this finished by the end of november i need to set myself some targets. Looking at the instructions there is 105 step's not including the final painting/weathering so i reacon i need to try and average 3ish step's a day.

Managed to put in a monster shift today as it's holiday monday north of the border. Looking at what i've managed to do in 15ish hours, it doesnt seem a lot. The kit comes with two PE frets but one is a lot thicker than the other and i'm strugling to cut the parts off with the tamiya PE scissors, it's that bad i'm thinking of using the dremmel with the diamond tipped wheel.

Still a fair bit of detail painting to do though.

Spent most of this evening masking the detail parts of the main cockpit, i was going to brush them but decided against it (no short cuts)

Looking great! I've decided to hold off on mine until I get the Mustang mostly assembled.

Thanks. yeah, the mustang and this would be quite a lot to keep on top of.
I was having a look at the mustang kit and apart from the corsair (i dont have it so i cant tell) it is the bigger build of the four fighters so even that on it's own is quite an undertaking !

That is looking very nice Mate.

I love the sense of order you build with. That cockpit is going to look awesome. :th: :th:

Mine is calling me from the stash. I hear it whispering, come to daddy! It will have to wait though. I fear it will become a hanger queen given the number of 1/32 birds I have in the pile. Its a tough life
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Thank you, i appreciate the kind comments as always :thumb1:
I know what you mean about the growing pile of 32nd kits. During the 109 build i told myself no more aircraft, just stick to cars and bikes but thats two 32nd kits i have bought in the last couple of weeks alone !
I expecting the M10 to show up today so looking forward to that.

Great stuff. Did the M10 arrive today? I got back into mine yesterday. Painted the interior of the hull and turret. Was planning more today but best laid plans and all that.

That's quite a great start! I've often wondered why one of the mid-sized planes the Brits flew was named after such a small bug...like, the fighter gets a grand name like "hurricane" but a bigger bird gets "mosquito."

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm guessing due to it's speed and agility? It was one of the fastest planes in the world in 1941.

Whe i was gluing the four twisted parts of the ammo belts to the top of the ammo box i knew i had to try and get everything in place temporary to make sure there would be no gaps where they meet the guns, so i thought i would have to spot tack the ammo box to the bulkhead with cyano but it just shoved on and stayed there with the slightest bit of resistance to keep it in place. I was even able to turn it upside down without it all falling away !

If there is anybody about to build this kit reading this you might want to do the same with these parts. Tamiya already ask you to leave part of the sprew on but that only stops vertical movement, they can still be very very easily moved sideways. If it were to break off it would be a nightmare to repair as the contact point is so small !

Quick question though, how come you've snuck in a Spitfire canopy and cockpit door?

Got a build going on the sly have we?

Thanks, tamiya have really out-done themselfs with this kit. The cockpit and merlins could be kits in their own right !

Ah, nothing gets by you ! Yeah, i built it in 2010 but no weathering or anything. After the 109 build i reacon i could add to it now. It was only the second aircraft after their F-16, talk about diving in at the deep end !

After the detail painting and assembly of this lot is done it's just the undercarrage and wheels to do before i'm forced to do the washes and weathering.

Now that does look complicated! Knowing Tamiya though, I bet it will look superb with a bit of TLC. I thought there was a 1 piece affair for the internal framing, but it turns out that is for the HK Models kit! :bash:
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Even with it being 1/32 the frame parts are tiny. I cant see me missing them out, it's not something i would usually do.
I hope i'm not putting you off building yours. I'm just wanting a moan.......right, feel better now

It'll be fiddly as hell but definitely worth it! Look forward to a pic :thumb2:

The whole thing looks brilliant so far by the way. I love how much detail there is in 1/32!

Went to assemble these parts for priming and realised i've lost a part. After about an hour of looking, i've given up so i'll need to resort to some real modeling to make another. If it doesnt work it'll be the gut's of £20 for a new sprue so fingers crossed :ooops:
