Gentlemen
Looking to buy best 1/32 scale Spitfire kit, NOT including Tamiya. The Tamiya 1/32 kit is too expensive. I would
appreciate your opinion for the best kit after Tamiya.
I am leaning to Revell Germany due to the price. What do you suggest?

Apologies, your post has slipped through the cracks! I suspect folk don't rush to answer these sorts of questions because they are very subjective. All I can say is to stay away from Revell's Mk22/24, its a Brad Pitt kit! Revell's MkIIa is a 2014 tool & gets ok reviews.

Completely agree on all points. It is subjective based on what you are willing to spend. The Revell Mk22/24 is cheapest but its an absolute dog's breakfast of a kit. I've read good things about their MkII, for the money its a very good kit, if its anywhere near as good as their 2015 Fw190 then it should be a fun build.

Hobbyboss are meant to be ok too but they will set you back almost double the Revell kit. Is it double the quality - probably not, especially given the rear fuselage behind the cockpit is the wrong shape - far too round on top.

I can more than agree with the Revell Mk 2a kit, I've done two of them and they were both great kits to do and only about £20 or so.

Price appears to be your main concern, in which case why not drop to 1/48 you can get several tamiya kits for under £20, which I'm hearing you'd like but are just out of the budget. It would also help if we knew where in the world you're located as some kits aren't easily found in some counties.

I live in New Jersey, USA, near the Atlantic ocean. I think this is in my profile, not sure. I have a US$60 (about BP46) ceiling. This fits into the HobbyBoss price range which I can purchase for US$50 in the US. The Revell kit can be purchased for US$24 in the US. Therefore as the other gentlemen stated the HobbyBoss kit is about twice the cost of the Revell kit. The question is whether the HobbyBoss kit's quality etc. is worth
100% increase in price. The HobbyBoss kit has Photo Etch parts for the intakes and pilot's safety belts, plus it provides a detail engine which Revell
does not. However, I do not plan to display the plane with the cowling removed. So is the PE parts worth the extra cost. I do not think so since I can buy the pilot's belts in the off market for about US9. So I am left with the quality of the basic kit, Revell versus HobbyBoss. I did see a youtube video where the reviewer raved about the quality of the molding etc., of the parts in the HobbyBoss kit. It is a tough decision. The only other kit worth considering in 1/32 scale is Tamiya which is US$90 to US$120 in the US. This is too expensive, over my $60 threshold.

Thanks. The HobbyBoss 1/32 Spitfire Trop version is basically the same as the 1/32 HobbyBoss MK VB in price. I can get both in the USA. No need to go to Hong Kong.

PS Is that "Mr. Bean" in your ID photo? I find him hilarious. Can just imagine him in the army. When my unit returned to the US from Germany what was left of us became a basic training unit in Camp Carlson, Colorado. During the five months I was in Colorado (before I was discharged) we always had a "Mr. Bean" type. Did not know left turn from right etc.

I would go for the Revell Spitfire as it is a super kit and the HobbyBoss one has a couple of problems. The upper fuselage behind the cockpit is the wrong shape being far too rounded which looks very odd if you are familiar with the Spitfire. Also the horizontal stabilisers are depicted as being fabric covered and need replacing with resin items.



Edit: Just to illustrate I am not being a rivet counter, HobbyBoss is top and Hasegawa with correct shape below:

They're both pretty sizeable errors. Its interesting that Trumpeter's 1/24 offerings have exactly the same problems. I wonder if the 2 companies are linked.

Yes they are, I believe Trumpeter produces the plastic for HobbyBoss and you will notice they rarely release overlapping subjects i.e. a particular tank or aircraft in the same scale. I love Trumpeter and HobbyBoss armour kits but for some reason they quite often mess up some aspect of their aircraft releases which is a great shame.
