Tamiya 1/12 Hayabusa steering screw problem

Post by Davethepitch »

Hello all

I am half way through a Tamiya 1/12 Suzuki Hayabusa build and now I have come to attaching the front forks I have noticed the screw that is used has no head on at all and is just a threaded rod.

The length of the screw is 1.6 X 20mm and I wonder if anyone knows where I can get one or how to get over this problem.

At the moment I see no solution and I may end up righting the bike build off as it may be more trouble than enough.

Thanks Dave

I have been to a couple of hardware stores but they do not do screws that small.

Worst comes to worst, you could always use a 1.6mm or so piece of solid copper wire or even an old small drill bit of the right size, then glue it all together, with a small shaped piece of sprue or something glued to the top to cover it. It's not as if working steering is essential.. is it?

A quick search on ebay came up with these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M1-6-M2-M2-5- ... 92e4c2a4aa
Looks like minimum order is for 5 of 1.6mm x 20mm, £2.85.

Or you could take a piece of sprue, thread it with a tap and die kit and screw the rod into it. Sand the piece to fit and boom!

But personally,I would just call tamiya and have them send a new one :pistols:

Dave, are you certain the threaded rod is not for something else, the wheels maybe ?with a nut on each end ? I've had that before with a tamiya bike

No mate it is definitely for the steering as the swing arm and both wheels bolts are in place.

Well my new 1.6 X 20mm screws arrived from eBay and i thought at least i can attach the front forks NO CHANCE the head of the screws is a lot larger and i could not get the screw to even get near. :wall:

I sat down and had a think and realised the only option is to grind down the head of an already small screw with a dremmel so that is what i did and after about 5 minutes looking like Mr Magoo and hot fingers i got the head as small as i could see and hoped for the best.

Viola it worked and now for a touch of black on the head. :)

Nice recovery job Dave, for future reference though rc servo case screws are a very similar if not the same size.
