Dragon 6560 Panzer IV Ausführung H with Zimmerit

Hello all,

Hereby my entry into the Panzer IV SIG.
The Dragon 6560 Panzer IV Ausführung H with Zimmerit.



And a photo of all the kit sprues.



I will make a winter camouflage sceme with this vehicles and I will replace the DS tracks that come with the kit with some Friul Model Winterketten.

Been a while, but here is my first update.
I started working on the kit a few weeks ago, but due to other things going on I haven't made as much progress as I wanted. As you can see in the pictures below I am still in the building phase.

In the picture below you can see the rear of the hull. The overal fit was good, but quite tight in some places. It turned out ok though. In the painting phase I will use my new set of rustcoloured paints to make it look nice.


The next three pictures are of the turret. This was a nice subassembly. I made an old Dragon kit of a Panzer IV J last year and I could really tell that this kit is much newer. The fit was much better than with the old kit. Especially the Schürzen are much better designed.

The second with the Schürzen added. I still found them difficult to get placed correctly, but it turned out OK



As you might have noticed on the two above photo's the commandercupola looks a bit strange. I noticed this to my horror and wondered if I could still fix it. Luckaliy I remembered the trick where you put some Tamiya Extra Thin on the part between the two plastic parts where the glue is. The Extra thin dissolved the glue and I was able to put the cupola on correctly. Anyway, here is the result of the turretbuilt

Small update

The build process is finished. Here two photos of the hull.
There are some small PE parts on the hull, but I didn´t have too much trouble fitting them.
Overall the hull was a rather easy build. The rails for the Schürzen were even a rather easy fit. I built an older generation Panzer IV kit form dragon a while ago and the Schürzen rails were a disaster.



A picture of the tank assembled. The wheels and some small parts are not attached yet. I decided to put them on after the paint process.



I primed the kit with MIG Ammo surface primer in rust colour. I primed it in this colour because I will use it as the paintlayer that shows up after chipping.



The next step will be painting the camouflage. The basecolour will be Dunkelgelb and I’ve not decided on the camo pattern that will be sprayed on. The whole tank will be chipped.

This will not be the final camouflage, I will give the whole vehicle a whitewash so the Winterketten will look more in place.

Another small update.

I decided to just paint the turret. I used Mig ammo´s Chipping Fluid to create the chipping effect and because of time constraints I didn´t want to do both the hull and turret at the same day.

I sprayed the turret with two layers of chipping fluid, letting both layers dry completely. See this photo.

The turret was then sprayed with Dunkelgelb.

I thinned the green paint a bit and lowered the air pressure a bit to make spraying the paint on a bit easier.



After all the paint was on I waited about half an hour to create the chipping. I create the scratches using a toothpick and brush. I´m quite happy with the result.

My new update:

Just like the turret, the hull was covered in two layers of Mig CHipping fluid. Each drying between application.



Next I painted the entire model in Dunkelgelb and painted Resedagrün stripes on it. My theory is that the sides would not be camouflaged, because there would be Schürzen in front of the sides. This whole tank will be covered in wintercamo anyway.



I assembled all the wheels and they’re ready for painting



I also spend this week working on the Friuls. They have all been cleaned and burnished. Next week I will assemble them.



I also tried my new Verlinden German Number photoetched masks. I still have to chip the paint a bit. This time with a fine brush.

Small update this time.

I´ve painted the turret in white paint for the winter camo

I used the same technique for the white paint as for the scratches: Mig Chipping fluid. I used Satin white as the white colour. I covered the turret numbers with some Tamiya Tape.



The whole turret was then sprayed with the white paint. Varying in thickness of paint applied.



I removed the tape to uncover the turret numbers and used a brush with water and some cocktail sticks to create same chipping of the white paint.

A larger update this time

Since I didn’t like the super bright white of the satin white paint, I decided to use a filter to give the white a somewhat less bright appearance. I used MIG Brown for Dark Green Filter for this



I rather like this product since it gives a very slight colour difference to the white. You can see in the picture below. The right side of the air filter has a filter applied while the left isn’t done yet. It’s a very subtle change, but it looks much better! I applied the filter using a small flat brush.



For the hull I used the same process as for the turret. I covered up the hull below the fenders with some tape since I don’t want the white paint there. I applied two layers of chipping fluid




Next I airbrushed the top, front and rear of the turret with White Satin paint, varying a bit in intensity



Next up was the chipping of the hull. I used a somewhat large brush to apply water to the model before making some scratches using a hard brush and a toothpick. Here you can see the difference between the parts that have and haven’t been scratched

Next up is detail painting the tools, machineguns and exhaust. After that I will apply a filter to the hull and then it’s up to pinwashing. I will show the photos of that process in the next update.

The final update before my reveal later this week. I´m still positive that I can finish the build before the deadline ends.

The painting of the hull and turret are more or less completed. I added a few highlights with some oil paints. I might add some streaking or other effects after the pigments are done.

I assembled the tracks. I really like to assembly, though it is a bit fidgety.
Here the track links are put in groups of ten and all the pins are all cut in pieces.



The tracks are assembled. I really like the way the white metal is turned into a rusty- black look by the burnishing fluid.



Next up: Applying in pigments to the lower hull



I used four different colours of pigments to create the dirt

After the colour pigments dried I added some white pigment to create a snow effect. On this picture the track and wheels are on. The obviously need some weathering, which I will do the following week.

It’s done! I’m happy to report that I finished my Panzer IV for this SIG.
