1:144 Revell Saturn V

Well after finally finishing a model properly for the first time in three decades, with a lot of help from Paul's tutorials, it's time for me to build a model from my childhood. Although my memory failed me and I bought the wrong one! I actually built the Airfix version as a child and then got the kids to buy me this one for fathers day a while back, oops.

I've always had a love of space so after getting back into the hobby I straight away wanted to build this model again as I remember how huge it was. Unfortunately this Revell version has a few issues with it which even for me prove to be a bit too inaccurate...

I'll get onto these later as I just wanted to get this thread going so that I now have to build it.

So am.i being a rivet counter here, I hope not?
The first inaccuracy going from bottom to top are the F1 rocket engines. In the picture below you can see the one from the kit, a partially modified one from me and a resin after market one.

None are ideal. I don't like the way the kit version has been lazy and joined the to inlet pipes together hence me trying to cut out the excess plastic. The resin version are from a "man in a shed" and the casting is not the greatest although this is my first experience of resin. They look like copies of the Airfix version with a bit extra detail.

I think for the time taken to tidy up the region I may as well deal with the kit versions, wish I had not stick the halves together now. A bit of lead wire etc should add further detail and I will probably strap them all in aluminium foil anyway to mimic the baffling they had on before launch.

Also at the base is where the engines connect...

Again here is the kit and the resin add on. I got the resin add on because it's cast to show the baffling already.
However, again there is a lot of clean up and I prefer the time detail on the model version. Also if I am going to use modified kit engines I think I'll stick with the kit version.

Well this is the my first venture into the world of rivet counting and resin. A bit hit and miss so far but there is more...

I hate having to do all that clean up with those resin parts also, but most times the detail they add just makes it worth the effort. I would love if those companies would remove the parts from the molding. I really hate having to use a saw to release them.

Yes I agree this is my first time using resin so I'm being a bit cautious I suppose but there are a few more parts I bought where the added detail is works apart from the kit parts.

So after much struggling with the F1 engines and stage 1 I thought I'd move onto stage IVb. I've got a bit of resin to improve things here as well.

On the left is the kit stage base and engine while on the right is the resin version. Much more detail and still some bits for me to add as my attempt at scratch building.

Did a littlw bit of scratch building to add some pipes and helium spheres. Think I'll add a bit more tubing but overall looking better I think...

I saw these rockets at Cape Canaveral when I went to Florida and they are absolutely massive.

In fact the second time we went Florida I actually watched a rocket take off and it is a breath taking experience.

Oh wow sorry I missed this! Yup I can understand.. photosuckit hits another one. I have this Revell Saturn V in my stash now and even had the 1/96 version too for a while. Built the flying (estes) one twice too. Love this machine.

Oh please no issues. I just thought I missed a really cool build on this rocket. Its so cruel what PB did too alot of you.
It's my fault I've been here almost a year and just discovered "new posts".

You've not missed much. I got a bit pedantic over the inaccuracies in the model and have really progressed very far with it. Actually you have prompted me to take it down from the shelf of doom and have another look that deserves a big thank you.

Oh wow great! Yea Ive got the 5 in my stash (built it as a kid too) and made the estes 1/100th one. It got crunched years ago and now, have a newer one in the stash as well that I started a while ago. Love the flying one but its not that accurate (it needs to fly) so the Revell (or Monogram) one has always been my fav. (even with the oddly shaped engines?) I see you mentioned the resin ones you use for the F1's.. wow great! I have not got any third party stuff yet but it does look really cool.

The second stage J2 engines tho have always ticked me off tho for this 144th scale but thats a different story. Still want to get the airfix version but there is some issues with the command module with that one I hear. arrgg! I do have the Saturn 1B tho from airfix in the stash too which I want to do someday soon, but I need to really improve my skills 1st. Would look cool to see them together.

The one tho in my stash is the Monogram one from the 80's, but yea.. the exact same molds, they are the same company really.



I just love anything to do with that kit or any of the Apollo stuff! So cool you do as well. When you get the time, please continue the build if you can. Would love to see it!

oooo me too. never thought of Haynes making a Saturn 5 manual! sweet!

It is full of great photos and diagrams plus a lot of information it even has a section at the end on Skylab. I have seen Haynes manual for the shuttle as well.
The pages are good quality nothing like the newspaper print used in their car manuals.
I think it well worth the full price but even better for £6 of course.
Just checked on Amazon it is available for £6 some greedy persons are trying to sell it for £64! I think they are based in USA.
