My Ducati 1199 Panigale S Build

Post by Plopper »

Went to Chester Tuesday and after asking on all your recommendations I decided to get this one first and make it my first build in public (so to speak)!

Just to give you an idea of my Abilities (or lack there of) I'll post a couple of pictures of old builds, some VERY OLD!

Image

That I did about 30 years ago in my first stab at modelling when I was young, I recon I was model making from about 15 until I was 25 ish, but towards the end of that time I was only doing bikes for my Dad. It is all hand painted and it shows! Very bumpy finish.

Image

That one was towards the end of that period, IIRC that was a rattler can for the main colour and hand painted for the rest.

Image

This one was built from the kit colours without painting except for the detail as I remember, the figure is all hand painted.

Image

That one was my last effort with all Airbrush and even pre-shading to see what it looks like on a none military model!

So that's a short history lesson! Well some of my history of model making anyway.

Now on to the Pani!

Image

Lovely bit of box art.

Image

Some monstrous masking on such a small piece TWICE!

Image

Most of the engine and exhaust done.

Image

And that's how I left the shed yesterday all ready to attach page 3 of the instructions tomorrow, the airbox I think!

Got my paint yesterday.

Image

I've been working on the rear swinging arm today.

Image

Just added two pipes to the engine. Had a mini disaster with gluey fingers while glewing them in. Ended up with glue marks all over the pale gold covers on the other side to where I was gluing. I have no idea how. But thankfully I was able to just re-spray over them as I didn't leave my prints on the.

That's the parts for the swinging arm all painted ready for tomorrow.

Some great looking builds there and its always interesting to see builds from a former modeling life and see where we are at now, the Panigale is looking really sweet, that engine build, paint and finish is looking very tasty, will be watching with interest, there are some great builds of this Panigale on my club web site www.garagistesland.com
Thanks Gary

Thanx for the kind words RossiM1. Yeah! It's odd I NEVER keep any of the models I build because I never consider them good enough! But my Dad has maybe 8 of my old bikes and as far as I can remember the oldest (the Aoki Cup Noodle Honda) is 30 years old. Things sure have changed in the hobby since then.

Some mind blowing builds from your club. Love the NSR 500s one of my favourite bikes.

Cheers Kiwigav!

After finishing my shed off today I've had a couple of hours on the Duc.

Image

The rear swinging arm is on, some lovely detail in that thing.

Image

Most of the rear suspension pieces. And I had another mini disaster!!! I lost the clutch leaver on the floor! Didn't realise and managed to run it over with the chair wheel!!! Thankfully it was OK after a small splodge of TET :-)

Bit more done on the Duc today. Mostly rear suspension, break and clutch assembly!

Image

Image

Got the colour on the Ohlins suspension reservoir completely wrong, I mixed the colours right, but I sprayed it over a black primer when I should have put it over a white one, and by the time I noticed I'd already applied the decal.

DOH! You live and learn!

My builds rarely go by the instructions as far as colours go so my bikes are not the right colours or accurate whereas yours are.

I've been at the Duc again today, well a lot of my time was taken up with trying out some ideas for the colour of the front forks from this topic.

http://intscalemodeller.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=20355

So I did these tests.

Image

Decided on the far right, Alclad aluminium base covered with a top coat of Tamiya Clear Yellow. I think it turned out well.

I had another mini disaster!!!

When sanding the parts for the head stock one of the caps for the folks went pinging out of my hand and I've lost the bugger, it's in the shed somewhere!!! So I had to try my hand at making another one out of styrene rod, tube and sheet!

Image

Didn't come out TOO bad.

Image

Doesn't look too bad after painting up!

All the bits for the front forks are now drying for the night ready for a clear coat first thing tomorrow.

I love Alclad, it's easy to use and as soon as it's dry practically (5 minutes) you can mask and apply the next colour.

Do you hand paint everything Dave?

I find if I hand paint anything I'm the same, can never wait. Even if I use the airbrush to speed things along.

The airbrush is different everything I use is touch dry in minutes and can be masked real soon after that.

Thanx for your interest. You should try one chops1sc. Even if you are into doing only military stuff you can always try a military bike first see if you like doing them. Then move on to a street bike.

Had a good day in the shed with the Duc today, oh and a stroke of luck, while I was looking for something else that I dropped on the floor today I found the doohickey off the top of the headstock so I've painted that up and it's now sitting in pride of place on the bike.

Image

Some painstaking masking again, those are the wheels for the paddock stand, oh! and the returning doohickey!

Image

Speaking of painstaking masking I had loads of trouble trying to get the wheel decals to stick (yep me unlucky with Tamiya decals again!) so I have painted the red strip around the wheels. About 90 minutes of trial and error and respraying the black after some overspray I'm really glad I did they look great. I also masked the front brake discs for the aluminium they are still masked, hope they worked out OK!

Image

Front suspension on, it's really starting to take shape now! :-)

Image

A closer look at the headstock, well pleased with that!

IIRC, Alclad Aluminium, (it was either that or Dull Aluminium) with a couple of coats of Aqua Gloss over the top, but I did it over a black primer and didn't completely cover them, so it was kinda like a pre-shade, I've tried to do it with all the metal colours on this bike. In the past I've always made sure everything is covered 100% and always been disappointed with the look as it looks flat and bland, so I've been experimenting with this on my last two bikes, I was going to try masking the weld seams but chickened out as I got such a nice look on them I didn't want to ruin them!

Hope that makes sense.

Ta for the kind comments!

I've had half a day in the shed with the Duc today, mostly catching up on little bits and pieces.

I've had another bit of bad luck, well not really bad luck more a mystery! The screw for the front wheel has gone missing or wasn't in the pack to begin with, so I've had to use some styrene rod glued in place, but I really like the way it has come out as I hate the screw heads on a finished bike they look so huge and out of scale. Think I may use the idea more often!

Does anybody know if there is a company that does covers for the screws in any of the detail up kits?

Anyway, this is where I'm at as of leaving the shed this evening!

Image

You can see the bare white of the styrene in the front forks. The paddock stand is finished.

Various bits ready for priming tomorrow.

Thanx RossiM1, they were a bugger to mask but well worth it, the only bit of the decal that I used was the makers logo vastly cut down with my Tamiya decal scissors. And even them I had to use Microsol Krystal Klear to practically GLUE the buggers down. I'm dreading doing the main bodywork decals, although the paddock stand decal did go down perfectly with Tamiya extra strong decal juice!

Did loads and lots today but not much got on to the Duc, but I have got all the bits except a couple of clear parts off the sprues and at least primed now.

Have just had to switch to the mobile version of Photobucket as the web version not loading anything for me.

Image

That's the front brakes on. The Brembo logo hand painted as I didn't even bother trying with the decals. :wtf:

Image

That's most of the headstock and handlebars done. Just the instrument panel to do.

Image

And that's all the remaining parts all impailed ready for more work Thursday.

Another big-ish update today as I had a good few hours in the shed.

Image

Image

That's where I left the Duc this evening. All that lovely detail being covered up. Almost want to leave it unfinished to see the detail!

Image

From the top, looking good all the decals I did today went on fine except the tiny little one for the ignition key slot. So I painted that one!

Image

The front light assembly and all of the hoses on now too. Really neat the way the small things like the front and back lights go together and don't even need glue, I still have put very small amounts of glue on them, JUST in case. ;-)

Image

And the rear view, I'm really interested to see just how the seat comes together!

Image

All the bodywork painted and a coat or two of Aqua Gloss on! See how dry they are tomorrow and if they look shiny enough. Then see about putting them on!!!

Just a small update today, I did loads and it's almost finished, but there is only two tiny bits added to the Duc itself, it's very much a case of spot the difference from yesterday's picture of the same side.

Image

All the rest of the time was spent getting things ready for the final push!

Image

All the body work now painted, decalled and aqua gloss coated over the top, ready for final assembly tomorrow if it's dry enough!

OH! A couple of things I forgot. My usual bad luck with the Tamiya decals, I had one of the tank logos chip right on the D, but I think this one was my fault being too heavy handed.

And the rear of the seat assembly was a bit of a let down, I thought it was going to be like the rest of the kit and be a really ingenious fit together, but was in fact a very awkward glue job for four parts that could have easily have been moulded as two. The pieces that made up the left and right sides of the seat cowling, the bits that make up the air intakes. Hope the rest of the rear goes a bit nicer!

Well it's finished.

I'm quite pleased with the way that it's turned out, some mistakes and mishaps on the way but no killers.

One thing I did get late on in the build was a mysterious cracking effect in my paintwork, but only in one small location.

Image

Just there. The only thing I can put it down to is there was maybe condensation on that one bit as it was very cold in the shed when I was spraying. That or the second coat of Heroboy colour attacked the first for some odd reason??? :bash:

Image

Last work in progress shots, and Tamiya DID redeem themselves in my eyes when it came to the rear of the seat assembly. Went together very well.

Image

Not as ingeniously as the front cowling and screen though, that was a dream to put together.

Image

No problem with the side panels either. Now all that is left is the rear light assembly and number plate fitting!!!

Image

And the finished shots here!!!
