Getting started with Photo Etch

Gentlemen,
I am using photo etch for the first time and am excited but very cautious. I am building the 1/72 scale version of Eduard's La-7 using acrylic paint (Tamiya and Vallejo). I have painted the ejector seat, instrument panel, and side consoles. It's time to start with the PE but I have a question: Should I protect my work and spray on a finish? I am concerned that once I apply the CA glue to the unprotected acrylic paint it may run or do something undesirable. So, should I apply a finish or are my concerns unwarranted?
Thank you for your sage advice!
Joe
