Barry Sheene Akai Yamaha YZR500

This is a fill in build while waiting for supplies to carry on with the MFH Williams, it's the re released Tamiya kit, which is essentially the Kenny Roberts bike but with the Akai decals,and some new 3 spoke wheels.
These old Tamiya bikes still build well just need a bit of clean up on mould seams etc. Here are the first photos of what has happened so far.

Sorry for the random way I have done this I need to find out how to sequence photos so that they relate to the order of build, IT is not my thing being an old fart,
What I have done is scratch build all the cabling for the carburetor linkages, replace the vinyl tube in the kit with more in scale fine wire, have added the bits that are missing off the engine the rev counter drive on the lower right side crank case, the throttle mechanism on the right side of the cylinder head, scratch built the throttle cable links on the handle bars, and the kill switch on the left hand bar plus a proper clutch cable connector.
Detailed the coil packs with electrical connectors and heat shrink.

Looking great so far. Bazzer Sheen, those were the days. Met him once in a hotel, absolute top bloke. More metal in him than a transformer.

He was pretty well every lads hero I used to go to all John Player Trans Atlantic Trophy races back in the 70's when you could actually go up to them in the paddock and they would speak to you sign autographs and generally have a laugh, Barry signed my replica Donald Duck helmet I had a Suzuki 380 GT triple done out in the Heron Suzuki colours, and riding it like I thought I was Barry Sheene landed me in hospital for 8 months after hitting a dry stone wall and a telegraph pole.

Crikey, the old 380 triple! Mate of mine had the kettle, the 750 triple and I bought one of the first 400/4's to come into the country in '75. That was a nice bike.

I got it from Hobbycraft quiet a while ago now it's just been in the stash, just had a quick search on the web it would appear that ebay is possibly the only way to get one.

Yes gary same here mate had gt250 then went onto rd250 water cool what a bike for the time surprising am still here .we had are first british winner this year since barry sheene in 78 in gp racing

Hi Paul
The wire is 0.25mm stainless core and 0.35mm, the braided hose is from Top Studio, via Hiroboy, and the connectors are from RB Motion and Sakatsu again via Hiroboy.

Thanx for the info, yep I was thinking the same, there are a LOAD of bikes on Tamiya's official list that are OOP that I am damn sorry that I've missed out on now!

A little progress over the last few nights, made the clutch guard from some scrap p/e sprue and drilled it out, got the exhausts detailed, made the weld seams using pva glue applied with a cocktail stick, then painted when dry with Valejo aluminium, then alclad jet exhaust, then the heat staining was done with alclad hot sepia, and clear blue and a very weak thinned down Tamiya clear orange, then a final coat of Tamiya Smoke again very heavily thinned to give the oil stain effect. Got the rear end built and the chain and wheel in place, used brass tube for the rear axle and made the bolt heads from hexagon plastic rod, did the same with the swing arm fixings, I prefer to do this instead of using the mini screws that Tamiya provide.
Next to start on will be the front forks and the body work which I can get on with tomorrow on my day off. Here are the photos as to where it's at for now.

I built one of these years ago. One of the last models I built as I remember before returning this year, wasn't anywhere near as good as yours love those exhausts

Kev, Dave and Paul thanks for the kind comments and following the build your encouragement is really appreciated, have got a bit more done on her over the course of today, assembled the front forks and wheel, added the decals on the exhaust cans, and detailed the instrument panel, added the rev counter and the water temp decals then covered them with Micro crystal clear to create the glass effect. added the cables to the instruments, plumbed in the radiator, and re made the rear brake pedal mechanism. Started on the body work, have got the seat unit and front wheel guard sprayed in Tamiya X1 Gloss Black these need to be polished and clear coated yet before the decals go on. On the home straight now should be complete in the next week or so , then it's back to the Williams.

It's a test of patience mate, I have a few builds on the go at the same time, to help kerb boredom/ impatience, while bits are drying or setting on one kit I get on with something on another, so I always have something to do, or if you like to build one at a time start on another bit of the kit, ie while waiting for the engine to dry start on the chassis and tub, do the seat belts, then come back to the engine a few hours later or even the next day, my mate Shane who has won several Gold medals at Telford preached this way of building to me and I think it's helped me improve my modelling a bit.

Smallish update given the tank and the fairing a couple of shots of Tamiya X1 Gloss Black, will leave these for a week to thoroughly dry out now before a wet sand and polish and a clear coat before the decals, and just plumbed the front brakes.

Here is where it's at now.

Managed to get some time in today, so have started the decals, so far have done the seat fairing, the tank and the front mudguard, and the front forks, the tanks was a bit of a sod as the rear decal was flaired, and when lined up there was a gap in the middle, so I cut a patch from some of the spare red decal on the sheet. Have wired the grips on the handlebars, and given the decaled body work a clear coat using Alclad Aqua Gloss.
Have also cleared the fairing which will be decaled next. All being well should get finished in the next week.

Paul, Scott and Dave cheers for the kind comments , really got into building this kit have started on the Tamiya ZXRR Moto Gp bike with a load of Top Studio bits, and the fork set, have built the chain so far which took a week and sent me nearly crackers and blind. I must get round to completing something soon, loads of half and three quarter built kits.

Nearly done, the fairing has been decaled, and clear coated, and given a light polish with final finish, and the fairing has been fixed to the frame, just the windscreen to fix in place, and the final few details to finish off.

Thanks Dave have had a few weeks off big issues at work the dealership I work at was arson attacked so modelling has taken a back seat had an issue with the fit of the screen typical of the older Tamiya bike kits have resorted to clear epoxy now clamped up and waiting to set got some Sheene Helmet decals made and have been modifying an old rider figure helmet that these will go on will get some photos up when I have a few minutes

No prob gary credit where deserved have had a virus for weeks plus doing 12 hr shifts dont leave a lot of time at the bench .
