Polikarpov Po-2, ICM 1/48 * Finished*

Hi everybody,

It's been a while since i posted something.
So it was time for a new build.

This time i'll build a biplane. This will be an PO-2
After reading a book over the all women air regiments in de russian army during WW2 "a dance with death" i stumbled upon this kit during a ism convention. I got this secondhand for a nice price

This type of plane was being used by the 588ste night bomber regiment which became the titel 46ste guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment for proven services.
This ladies gat the nickname "nightwitches" by the Germans. This mainly because their tactic to idle the motor and "glide" in over their target. The whistling sound of the wings made a sound of a flying broomstick.

Most of the missions were to, next to do some damage, keep the enemy awake through an ongoing stream of planes bombarding.

During the sort summernights they flew 2 or 3 missions, but during the long winternights they could, when wheater permitted, fly up to 9 missions each night.

Looking formward to build this kit and practice somewhat on rigging.

Finally i made a start with this beautiful legendary airplane.
First up is the motor.
The cleaning-up of the motor by removing the mold-seem has kept me busy for a while.
I replaced the plastic piece what supposed to represent the pushrods by copperwire.
Now we can actually see that there are two pushrods for each cylinder.
The original piece of plastic (with some flash) pushrod can be seen on the right of this picture.

Next I painted the interior and picked up the framing by painting these in a little darker tone of the base color and by giving it a wash.

I know there are still some ejectorpin marks to be seen, but i recon that they won't be visible when the hull is closed with the instrumentpanel in place. I did remove the ejectorpin marks located at the second cockpit.

I’am still searching the internet for some good pictures of the rigging and the control-cables. And at the moment it's freezing in my garage so i can't / won't be airbrushing for a little time. I don't expect this build to be finished this winter let's see how much progress i can make.

Just made some progress between christmas holiday and new years eve.
For every one a Happy New Year.

Made a adjustment on de rudder peddals.
Cut off half of it and made some straps from foil.

And corrected and replaces the plastic rod with some copper wire.

Last weekend i've been busy scratching a fueltank this was missing in the kit.
And will be clearly visible when looking down in the front cockpit.

Just a little update to break the silence.

Separated the elevator and replaced it in an downward angle.

I used a bent copper wire in my handdrill to fashion a couple of eyes to attach the rigging.

And glued them in the appropriate place where the rigging is supposed to be attached onto the wings/ fuselage.

Hopefully i'll find some time and spend it on this beautiful bi-plane.

Time for a little update.

I made myself a pair of seatbelts.
The first one done the second one will be done after painting the plane.

After the primre i pickup the frame with some white hi-light.

finally the first colour could be sprayed on. starting with the undersurfaces.

Now it's time to spray the three colour camo-scheme.

Iám happy to inform you all that the first colours are applied.

This camo was sprayed on free-hand.
Next time i'll leave the topwing off.
It was a bit of a crime to airbrush between the wings and struts.
The second and third colour will be retouched, i'am not very content how these turned out.

Cause i wasn't happy with how the colours looked, i repainted the green and gray colour.

i use fishing line and brass tube.

The misses wants some tours to be completed and with this fine weather, i rather spend my time in the garden then indoors

This weekend finished my nice little bi-plane.

I had a great time building this one.
Things i added to this kit:
Seatbelds
scratch build a feultank
replaced the struts of the wing at the back for copper wire
replaced the wingguards for copperwire
detailed the engine a bit

And still if one wants to, there are a few things what could have been adjusted.

But i'am very pleased at how this one turned out and is leaving my workbench to find his place on a shelf.
