Bit of a tough kit im lead to believe from reading various internet sources. Still collecting aftermarket stuff for it and thinking of posing it in a state of repair on a maintance Diorama.



looking forward to making a start on something.

I've been looking at this kit for this year's Feline Fever GB, so will be interested to see how it goes together!

I was thinking about this kit, I must have been reading the same reviews as well. I was undecided about getting it, but you've made the decision for me, lol!

I'll follow along to see how it goes, maybe I can do it for the feline gb.

being as this one has so much on show ive searched interwebby and grabbed some pics to help us out
some ref material,













so ive made a start and progressed front to rear fuselage straight away, dont want to be caught out with rough seam lines blocked by intakes and other parts later on. pics to follow shortly.

Ok so work has started in Ernest. Firstly being scared of the way the kit has you build up front and rear sections of the fuselage and put them together at the later stages of the build made me do some dry fitting. Some obvious flaws stood out straight away. Firstly the shape of the spine behind the canopy is different, then the side joints would also be impossible to fill and sand. So I've decided to build the kit with the front and rear sides of the fuselage stuck together from the outset. As seen here




As you can see I've sanded and filled already, I will have to move the panel line just below the spine where it will disappear behind the intake once fitted like this



Then fitted in the resin bays like so. To get the wheel bays to fit you have to shave of the corner to fit as shown by the file tips. Also the landing gear has to be installed at this stage, I just couldn't see a way round it.




Also the cockpit does not fit out the box with the rear bulkhead being pushed away from the sides by to much plastic thickness on the inside of the fuselage. A quick shave sorts that though



Well that's where I'm at as of now, next up ill spray the bays a detail up before closing the lids with a small dot of canopy glue so I can pop them open again later after the paint jobs finished. The cockpit will be decided upon later as I'm trying to decide between PE, kit PE or a resin set.

Why would it not be possible to add the undercarriage at the end?

Thanks Capt. no problems that I can see as yet, I keep dry fitting everything. One point to note is the nose spreads outwards viewed top down as the sides are ever so slightly banana-Ed. But no force required as yet lol. It'll be fiddly getting the exhaust bay to line up but I've done that in the dry fits ok. You just have to glue it from the rear end first a let that cure then keep slowly moving forwards from my observations.

Undercarriage is a pig to get in, I glued the resin air brake bays in and just getting the leg in afterwards on them was a mare. You have to view it from inside the plane to twist it in right. Then cover it with the landing gear bay. Maybe it was harder due to the resin, but I spent 5mins filling to get them to fit.

Another note is I built one leg more than the other just so I don't get a parts muddle later. jags have some funny angles with the leg angled forward and out, then the trailing arm hangs backs at a different angle.

Can sympathize with the pooch as I'm trying to motivate myself to climb the rickety stairs to the draughty spot under the eaves and get on with a build.

Bit of a update, today my aires cockpit arrived. so i can crack on with that next week as it looks like a kit to build in itself!


so in prep i made some progress with the engines and avonics bay.


now those engines look ok but the one thats open is begging for some scratch building. so after digging around the world wide thingy i saw these pics and tried to copy as best i could using a bit styrene sheet and old wire thats used for training plants. the smaller stuff was .5mm solder. i tried just to busy it up a bit. the finer stuff would have to be smaller than a hair so skipped them.

So I opted for the Aires gr1 cockpit. BOY it is like a build all in itself. The seat belts alone took me a whole evening just to fold and pass little tiny buckles through the belts. So much so I had to keep walking away from it, have a cuppa before I could steady my hands enough to cracking on. So here's the pics of that part.

Well that's the seat. Next up the cockpit

I didn't take many pics of the pit before paint and just got it built and installed.





Was a bitch to get the it anywhere near closing up. I had the dreamed out on both sides of the fuselage as I sanded so much of either side of the pit the resin was almost see through. Even so the plastic on the starboard side took a beating which has left me a bit of a gap at the canopy seal. I'll fill that with plasticard shim I think. Here's the pic of port side internal


With that done it's time to get the two half's of the fuselage together. Well that was another evenings work and as I was slowly moving forward this is the amount of twist in the front section...



I had to super glue to tac that. Then cemented. Tomorrow will tell if it came out all good... fingers are crossed

Looks like a bit of a nightmare getting that cockpit in, but it looks really good!

that would be a understatement mate.

i have got the kit closed up now, but got quite a bit of seem sanding to do around the nose. more to follow as course... but for now im pretty fed up. can see why this kit gets shelfed

Well after a weekend of fettling, sanding, filling more sanding, and scribing i have one jag. The plastic is fairly hard so the sanding took forever. Well everything has took forever to be fair. I even had to reset the nose twice. but i think im there abouts.

Personally i love the overwing pylons. they look better with winders onboard obviously Its kinda a british thing like the lightning with overwing pylons. Jags are very cool in my book, this is statement is made from memorys of me younger days watching them fly out from Coltishall in Norfolk

Of course with such a hard kit to build i had to build a simpler Airfix kit. so me and my 2 recruits taking some fun build time together whilst letting them experience the feeling of creating the joys of modeling.

Well done on persevering with this one - the fit looks to be a nightmare but the addition of the detail in the cockpit and the extra work you've done on the exposed engine really look the business!

so today i got a couple of hours in on the old Jag, mostly still not happy with seems, but i did notice something thats been niggling me for a while.... the Aux style inlet duct just before the tail. The kit has done little to recreate the opening so i drilled it out. Then out came the files and a smidge of plasticard. this is the result so far.

Under a coat of Ultimate black primer. And the making good starts all over again..

Fantastic news that the young ones are getting involved into building kits. They must have the patience of a saint. Great progress on the Jag, btw.

well the drama continued. But i have finally got the camo down in the 2nd time of asking. 1st time the vajello (grey colour ) reacted and crazed lik crazy when i layed it over the top of mr hobby off-white. could have cried

so had to rub it down again all over

ive settled on the xf2 and vajello grey. i guess ill will have to weather it down but at least its flipping painted.

Great perseverance to keep at it and starting to come together well - hope the paint dramas are done and the finish will be easier from here on.

Thanks mate, shes had a beating this weekend. feel completely exhuasted with it TBH. well heres 13 photos of where she sits right know, ive decaled and flat coated. Talking of decals these ones are incredibly thin. many had to be repaired as they would shatter when positioning. I was like Arrrrrgggghhh FFs.
so with that done i still have weapons fit and a bit more wear n tear to add. bit off touching up and i should see her done.

Thanks guys, its been a real test of ones sanity. Its one of those kits that i dont think id do again. I base this on the feeling you get when your on the last stages of a kit and you just think I would love to build another one in a different scheme....well this aint one of them lol

small but needed improvement, as the intakes have no trunking so it would be totally possible to see inside a empty plane...Fod covers with a simple step by step pic guide. i wont go wild on details as a pic say a million words.
