Tims Iron Giant "Iron Head" 1/35 vignette

So I was lucky enough to spot on face book that some one out there had produced the head of the iron giant.
Now the iron giant was one my my favourite kids movies

So too have the chance too model it I could not turn the chance down
I ordered it from a great guy in the Netherlands and arrived in a very nice box


In side was two pieces of well cast resin. From there texture I could tell that the original design had come from 3D printer of good quality. The surface is a little ruff but a light sand with a Ultimate buffer will have it perfect in no time



Now how I'm going too display it has been on my mind for a while. I had thought about making him an upper shoulders but I don't think it would have looked right
So I'm thinking along the routes of 1946 and him fighting for the allied army but he's been destroyed and his head is laying broken. Some scratch work too may be give him a neck and some ground work with a GI standing over his fallen comrade. This is a possible right now as I need to find a base and see how it all fits together

This is one of my favourite cartoon sic fi movies as well...well animated, smart, funny, sad and a bit of a message in the story
Looked into scale models of the giant on E Bay but mostly just figures
Have seen this noggin and the blinking bolt resin models...where did you get yours???

Yes the message and the whole way it's written is great the animation is spot on
I spotted it posted on the ism Facebook page and was given the name too contact. I contacted him and purchased very easy process. I have put his contact name below

Having fun Vans is the game of the
I like your idea Vans of having it being dug out.
I have been putting ideas threw my head on this one and the idea of the figure and head is staying. Im thinking of it showing that its crashed in too the ground like a crashed ufo with all the earth around one side. Still got many ideas going threw my head though. Main thing i want to nail down is the story behind the scene. I want to incorporate the iron giant story along with real time events and then all incorporated into my own new story

After the final explosion scene, the parts were shown scattered in the ice and snow I assume in the Arctic area...perhaps a snowy icy diorama

Now the idea of a snow and ice scene had gone threw my head but I think a snow scene is the hardest thing too get looking realistic. Its not to bad too get some snow scatter but the cold icy look is hard but it has been a thought

With some bathroom clear silicon applied over an icy blue painted base you can do wonders
Then UP has all that winter weathering stuff for surface effects

Ya, give it some thought
you paint the base up as you want then apply and sculpt cheap clear bathroom silicone...love it

If you add oil based paint to the silicone before it sets, it will go that colour too..that is how I made swamp water

I really like the x Wing swamp scene

So here is my idea so far
I cut two different size bases at work (don't tell my boss he thought I was doing proper work)

So with these cut I started my ideas
First it will be given depth by making the base different levels with foam insulation, so you got to try and imagination the head lower down and the figure higher
So first off is the oval base. I feel it gives more room too show the trench from impact, but is it needed ?



Next is the round base. I think it gives the same amount of room but the trench form the impact is a lot smaller.



So both bases I want it too have a tree it's come too rest on, it can have hit and knocked down leaves on to the head and floor. Both will be in a summer setting with green grass.
Please if you have the time let me know what base you think would look best. It's nice too get input from you guys

Ah good, you are working on it
I personally like the oval base as it lengthens the diorama and gives you more space to work with to add different focal points of interest. For example the overgrown impact trench in the forest floor, a pathway that the guy used to get there, maybe a log that kind of stuff.

I agree, oval. Not only for the above but it mirrors the general shape of the head while contrasting the round eyes. Something feels better looking at the oval mock up.

And yeah, you want to see the trench, otherwise it looks like the head is sitting in a pothole.

Shaping up to be so awesome...

It's got my interest. There is little building but lots of stuff to do too make it

So yeah I was leaning towards the oval base as well, so I think that will be the one. I will dig out the foam and start hacking at it

The impact trench can be made longer and will show better what happend with the head.

So I cut out the foam too fit the oval. I white glued it down and was hoping that I could get it cut too shape and the trench grooved out but did not take into account that white glue and cold weather make for slow dry time. So it will be a day time job tomorrow.

Really looking forward too this coming together.
Going too start the tree I hope tomorrow also

Got cracking on with the base this evening
Things too note when dealing with the yellow foam, it don't smell very nice and it makes a terrible mess when cutting and shaping. But on the other hand it's very easy too work with and shape.
So I started by cutting the foam edge too meet the shape of the wooden base.

Then I drew the shape I wanted to make on the base and started to cut a low v shape in the foam. I then placed the head on the foam and got the general idea of the hole I will need too dig out.


The pencil shows where the tree will be placed


The next step is too add the earth that has been pushed too the side of the trench. I cut some foam pieces and then hot glued them on the sides and the back. This gives me a base too start building the earth on.


Then I went too town carving it up. I got the general shape. This will be enhanced with more layers of filler and earth. The head was put in too check the hole was looking correct.



As you can see I'm going too need to put something on the inside of the head as we can't have it hollow. Last step for tonight was then too seal it with some white glue

Very nice, I like where it's going! When I was thinking of possible dio idea's myself with this head, I also was wondering what to put inside the head. I was thinking to just put some old pc electronics in it. Maybe a red led for one eye would be cool too.. Just thinking out loud.

While on the live show this evening I spent the time too add detail to the bottom of the head and add eye covers.

So first up was eye covers. Just simply some plastic card cut too shape and super glued in place




Next up came the detail for his detached neck.
First up had too cut a plate too seal it all up


Then I wanted too give it a stepped bolted metal rings shape. In the middle drill a hole for pipe and wires too come out

All cut out glued and centre drilled

Next came the bolt detail using one of my favourite tools, which I don't get too use enough RP Toolz punch set. I used my circle template too get the middle ring of bolts laid out evenly and then did the opposite position on the top and bottom rings



That was then stuck on the head, some extra holes then drilled for wires and piping

That's the main part of this bit done, I will add a few other details too give it a little more

Gosh the bolt rings on the underside of the head are just fantastic .
Loving everything you have done in such a short time, sad I missed it in the live feed, will have to watch again

Remember at the end of the movie how the bolts and other parts were finding their way back to the body??
I think make those wires look re-attatchable rather than torn and frayed as the robot could not be destroyed..like a plug or connection on the end of them

You mean like one large molex connector
Not what I had in mind but def a possible
I was thinking some type of something added at the end of each wire too look like it's been un plugged.
Going to have too think about it and see what I can image
Got a couple of days on the Stuka and live show so Saturday I will see what I decide

I had put this aside for far too long

I was working out out how too make the connectors. Using the hex punch and die set I could make some bolt heads but I wanted it too be like a nut so it slid over the pipes/wires. The only way I could do that was by punching a small circle out first then punch the bolt out. To do that needed to buy the round punch sets. Seeing as it was my birthday it was the only reason I needed to buy them

So this is what I managed too make to go on the ends. This is what I had in mind and I think it finishes it off well


Now some primer and work on the base
