I had a good chat with peter at emodels today and i think we are both excited by this build, i know i certainly am

Anyway the in box review has been done and sent to emodels to upload, ill post it up once done, i know lee did a review, but i couldnt build it and not review it, im not the best at reviewing kits so excuse me if the review isn't up to standard

Anyway the kit, i haven't taken pics of the sprues as the video shows it all, but the level of detail is superb especialy the riveting.


I made a start tonight on part 1, the cockpit.

The instructions are very clear and concise.


The main cockpit parts cut of the sprues and tidied up, sorry about the iPhone pics my dslr battery had died



And all glued in position, the kit is a joy to build, fit is superb with alot of parts holding themselves together without any glue.








Next stage, priming in alclad gloss black base, can anyone see where this is going

Wow I'm drooling all over these photos need to get a cloth. The detail is amazing I'm really looking forward to watch this come together Paul what scheme you going to do and if possible can you post what colours you're doing. I've done a corsair before a while ago but I got the wrong colour so it would help for when I get another.

I'm going to do the three tone scheme, dark blue, light blue and off white.

The colours required are ANA606, 608 and 601. These convert into FS colours, mr hobby does one of the colours but only close matches for the others so I think I use the akan set below

This akan set seems to fit the bill although the FS numbers don't match on one colour (the dark blue)

I tried spraying akan paints the other day for the first time and they airbrush beautifully.

Wow, the level of detail is superb and I will follow the build with anticipation. P.S. have just seen Peter's announcement on FB about the video build, so no pressure on you mate

Part 2 is underway today, I've just stopped to let paint dry before adding chipping fluid.

For anyone interested this is my camera set up now, it's in my spray booth at the moment but its similar when over my workbench.

Wide shot to the left close up on my lamp held on by a gorilla tripod



I can look at the screen directly in front of me as a reference too



So I assembled the seat and rear bulkhead with the PE bullet proof plates.

These were then primed in alclad gloss black base



I was planning to use dull aluminium but it was actually too dull so I used alclad aluminium In the end.



Next,up chipping and then the interior green

Ok so the chipping solution was applied and left to dry, two coats in total then the mr hobby interior green airsbruhed on. Once dry it was wetted and brushed hard removing some of the green paint work showing the aluminium paint underneath. i think it looks good. Next up ill be hand painting the cockpit details after chipping the front section. Just 2 hours of footage on two cameras to edit.

great work on the cockpit is that chipping a bit like the hairspray technique?

Yes Nige just its a water based product, i need to get just the normal chipping fluid as this one is real hard work to "chip"

To be honest im not sure, the one have is to replicate larger chips, which with it being 1/32 i thought it perfect, but its hard going getting the paint off, so i want to try the other one. i want to do a sinilar effect on the exterior paintwork so want something more controllable.

Lmao cheers Michael, defo got some better close up shots with the new camera so I'm very happy about that. It should be up on you tube in the next couple of days

So i spent the afternoon detaailing up the cockpit, i painted the side panels vallejo semi gloss black, as well as the two instrument panels in preparation of the glass/decal (these have been left of the cockpit for now. Ive been around the switch gear picking out buttons, the instruction and reference book helping immensely. Ive also painted and attached the headrest, as well as the rear tank too. Ive chipped away the footcontrol pedals, foot rest and behind the seat top in the same way i did it yesterday and thats about it. i havent filmed any of this as its too fiddly and boring watching me hand paint everything. Filming of part 3 starts on thursday.



Im gonna add a little more green to the footrest as too much has come off



Cockpit dry brushing, gloss coat, panel wash, matt coat and PE seatbelts in part 3, which will see the cockpit complete.

That is amazing detail mate and you have done a great job on it.

Frak... That's all I can say Paul... Frak.
I'd leave those foot rests. If you put a tiny bit of an umber pin-wash or some pigments in there it would look like regular grim I think.
It's a carrier based aircraft so I don't think there'd be too much dirt or mud. Mostly grim and oily stuff. Lots of scuffing though.

Looking good there Paul. If I had the cash then I would be keen to try one of these Tamiya 1/32 kits, I hear the Zero and the Mustang ones are fantastic as well.

Right so again ive been working on this, the cockpit is complete, i filmed part three today which get us to where we are in the pics below. Gonna put it to one side for a few weeks now as there's still part 2 to be uploaded to u tube and this one. Really enjoying the build, but i cant build it in a couple of weeks sadly lol. The kit is brilliant anyone considering buying just get it If you already have it build it now lol

So today i decalled the two instrument panels, which was a complete nightmare, i lost one dial as they are a pig to do and such a fiddly small part.
I then Drybrushed the cockpit (with tamiya chrome silver) which brought out more of the cockpit detail, and then assembled the PE seat belts, they needed annealing to conform to the seat. Little tip, if using a chipping fluid, CA glue kicker takes the paint right off, i nearly ruined the paintwork on the seat.
The seatbelts were then painted in vallejo model colour Stone grey and chocolate brown and the metal work picked out with tamiya chrome silver.

The entire cockpit was given a wash using highly thinned tamiya xf1 and once dry, i dry brushed again returning any lost detail.

The instrument panels and seat where glued in position and then the front binnacle cover and gun sight were masked and sprayed Mr Hobby flat black.

Ive got at least 10 hours of my time in this cockpit, im happy with how it looks, looking forward to cracking on

Obviously the entire cockpit underneath isn't weathered as it cant be seen once in the fuselage.

How would you rate painting this over 1/48 scale tubs.

Easier? as it is bigger of a lot harder.

Hard one to answer, easier as its bigger, harder as it needs more attention to detail. Its quite a complex pit compared to 1/46 scale too alot more parts. This isnt even the complete cockpit yet, i still have the side walls to do on the fuselage halves lol.

Its that bloody chipping that took ages

Thanks guys, i can see some bits that need touching up in the pics so I'll do that, also need to get some decent pics to send to emodels for their Facebook page.

My dslr doesn't have a macro lens yet so I may have to have a muck about

Ok so ive touched up those areas i wasnt happy with as well as added a touch more chipping in places.

Got some better close up pics with my phone (need to get a macro lens for the dslr) These pics are going to emodels too

You can get kits that are just cockpit builds Paul... I think that you would knock those out of the park Dude.

That cockpit is stunning and that paint chipping is perfect!

The level of realism is quite stunning. When you said there were some bits that you weren't happy with, I failed to see anything - but the latest pics do look even better

Talking of realism, I've thought of a way that we can save the nation a fair old wedge of the £34bn we spend on the defence budget. You and few of the other guys that I consider as "master builders" (pretty much all of the forum - you know who you are!!) get together and build some of the currently active UK military aircraft and the government can pass them off as additions to the fleet. We obviously get a cut of the savings and hold a huge ISM party with the proceeds!!

Love this build series. I am about to start my Birdcage and I have a question. After you chipped the cockpit you did a lot of detailing off camera, including painting the black instrument clusters. Did you brush the black, mask and airbrush, or you just good enough to airbrush without masking .

Hey kent.

Any parts actually attached to the cockpit where brush painted, the only black parts I airbrushed where the instrument displays.

Right so ive been gaging to get back to buildng this, ive been waiting for the eduard mask set and Akah paints, i know the kit has a mask set but its not laser cut needing cutting out, bit daft really. as i was waiting for the Akah paint set to arrive so thought i would get the mask set too.

Got them both now, the paint set looks great and i know it'll spray great as ive been using another set on my mig 29. i got the navy set plus an extra bottle of the dark blue as its the colour i'll use most. Again i got these from hobbycolours.com in greece, very fast postage highly recommend them. The mask set i got of ebay.





So i can get on with the corsair tonight or tomorrow

I have only just found this thread, glad I did because I have been missing something great. That cockpit is a pure work of art Paul, I am not just saying that, you really have done a brilliant job on it. This looks like a really awesome kit, I can see why people were getting so excited about it. Look forward to seeing the next part of the build.
