Tamiya 1/48 shturmovik

This is my first ever group build even though I have been visiting the site for quite sometime.
I've built a couple of models with my son and I hope this kind of thing will motivate us to do some more modelling together.
As I'm a beginner I know there are way way better modellers out there but I hope to learn from this build,try to improve,and more importantly just enjoy the build and plane itself.That seem to be most important part for us I think.

I also chose to do Tamiya's 1/48 iL2 as it is something I have always wanted to build and will, hopefully, A) look like an shturmovik il2, and B) look OK in white.

I won't be buying any after market stuff so it will be right out of the box,but I think it'll be helpful to set a few goals,which I hope will encourage newbies like myself to try out. Nothing complicated,I hope!

My goals.
1 To improve my painting via the airbrush.
2 To try chipping effect for the first time.
3 To make winter white wash camo effect for the first time
4 To use Tamiya clear and Tamiya semi gloss clear.

So without further a do I'll pop up the the photo's.
The kit was relatively cheap at just over 3000 yen,which i think works at at about 23 pounds.So pretty good value I thought.
Incase anyone is wondering why the Japanese and English version of the sturmovik are spelt differently, its because the Japanese use a different spelling system which closely resembles how the Russians speak phonetically. Hence a SHTurmovik. It's not a spelling mistake.

Super Glue

I've started some building and the first thing i decided to complete was tank in the cockpit between the pilot and the gunner.
I'm terrible at painting,and since i didn't have any "aluminium paint" as such,i decided to raid the kitchen foil instead.

I cut two thing strip and placed them on top with some super glue.
A little super glue on the bottom and just pulled the strip down. I think it looks better than paint, and it was really easy to do.

Nice work on that tank. i think the foil looks superb personally as it adds depth.

I mananged to open the box today and get something done,finally.
So here I did the whole cockpit in XF22 and tried to lighten some areas,by putting a drop of white into the mix, to give it some scuffs and scratches.
The pedals were brushed with some silver,softened with lightened XF22, and the control panel support was also lightened ,where I thought it had been kicked,legs rubbed against it, and generally worn away.Finally a little gloss over the decal to try and get a shine to it.

Next I tried to do the seat, with some XF22,some silver scratches,and dulled down with lightened XF22 to simulate wear and tear,and to take the edge of the silver. For the seat harnesses, I used the decals right out of the box, and I thought they turned out ok.
I popped them onto some kitchen foil, which in turn is attached to some Tamiya tape. Some decal setting solution on the foil,let it set,put some x-22 clear on top. I cut them out, and super glued them into place.

Well I've managed to get some more done. And what can I say this thing seems to cut of the sprue so cleanly,that very little filing needs to be done.
The fit of these parts has been faultless and any problems I have encountered, have been of my own making.

Here I finally get to put the cockpit in the tub.It was very nice fit,as is the gunners rear compartment.There isn't much there, but i decided to deviate from Tamiya for the leather seat.Just because I didn't want to buy the specific brand itself,and I think this vallejo colour looks really nice and leathery, and some lightened cockpit green to simulate scuffs.and scratches.

The gun set up looked pretty harsh all black and although I have no reference,I can only imagine that some blackness would have been taken off as the gun move back and forth along the rack over the years.So I decided to simulate this with some aluminium/silver colour.It looks ok,a bit harsh, but I wonder how I can tone down the brightness of it.MMmmmm Maybe some Tamiya black panel liner might take the edge off it.
One of the things I have found while building and painting this plane, was how relaxing and therapeutic it was. So much better than watching TV.

The fuselage halves went to together so well,I'm not even sure it needs any filler.I could be wrong but it just seems so smooth. I'll pop the wings on tomorrow.

Well I try to post some pics but for whatever reason when I upload from my computer/phone,I cant type under each photo what I have done.

Anyway, I've managed to do some more work,and its been very relaxing. Popped the fuselage together, and it fits very well.So much so,I'm not sure it really needs any filling.Except to hid the seem line,but even then, I'm not sure it needs it, because I wonder if the primer and paint would take that away.MMMM Anyway I decided to use Mr surfacer 500 mixed with 50,50 thinner and brushed over the front middle line a couple of times,and polished it down, and tried a wee bit of paint just it see how it turned out and it looks ok.


As for the wings these went on a treat.No problems at all and it doesn't need any filler.Although there is a slight raising where the two parts join but it looks ok, and I'm not sure it needs anything.Its not a stealth fighter I'm building, but it looks lovely.Especially the panel lines.


So I am not using any reference material mainly because,modelling can get expensive,especially for parents,so i decided to try and find some color pics of the iL2.easier said than done but I realised there are some video games on youtube that have a ton of close ups and effects on the iL2.I decided to use that for references.Especially for the painting if and when i get to that stage. There are close ups,and weathering effects in color so that's helpful.
A really nice model.The parts just pop off the sprue,and really don't need much of any clean up.If at all.

So another weekend has past and its time for another update.

The fuselage and wings are all on and I'm starting to turn towards the underside.

I did the bomb racks and that was easy enough apart from gluing them on the wrong way,so instead of cutting pulling,and breaking it,by test fitting the bombs, any little accident is removed.if you can see it,then it isn't there.

Next I turned my attention to the undercarriage. I would've liked to have left these off to the very end,but it appears it needs to go on as per instruction as putting the struts on after everything, else would be very difficult if not impossible.So I decided not to risk shoe horning them in.

This comes with a mask.It needs one for sure as cutting and putting everything on took ages....or it felt that way.

It certainly has been a while since I have managed to do an update.
Well i have been trying to do a few things.Some good,in that I'm trying new things, and some not so good,as they turn out.
but its been fun trying.
So I decided to mask the decals,with some blue tac, and then I thought about trying to use the spare decals as a mask for the star on the tail and the sides and it seems to have turned out ok.

I've never done a worn winter effect before but I was up for the challenge.
So I gathered.
1x more blue tac for more masking.
1x a supportive/wife/girlfriend/mother.
1x can of hairspray
1x old toothbrush
1x water,
Some tissues.

After I covered the decals and the rear gun with some blue tac,I decided to take the plunge and go for the wifes hairspray, ( not that I need it) and spray the upper fuselage with hairspray.
After the hair spray dried, I then got some Tamiya white acrylic and sprayed that over the wings,and allowed the paint to dry, sat back and enjoyed that all important cup of tea.
Then after everything had dried, I applied some water of the area I was working on and,got an old tooth brush out,and gently pulled the toothbrush back in the direction of airflow. I tried to chip it, streak it, and generally make it look as though the white wash was coming off the plane.

I've really enjoyed this part of the model and while it's not as good as I would have liked it has certainly taken away any fear of trying it. I think looking at the plane the next day can bring a new perspective to the plane.
I would certainly give it a go again,and even though it may not look good as I would've liked, I'm going to wait until the whole comes together.
The only problem i have now is,painting the canopy white and weathering it. The white is too bright compared to the rest of the plane. So I'm going to try and dull it down with some Tamiya enamel panel liner,and maybe paint on some chipping effects.
The prop will also need the same the same.
One thing about doing a winter camo for the iL2 was lack of reference material, being budget conscious I decided to look at some computer games on youtube. They have all been researched,weathered,painted,chipped by some nice artists and more importantly free and up close. iL 2 sturmovik was a good place to start.

If anyone has any ideas on how to dull down the white I'm open to suggestions.

Two very good ideas on trying to dull down the white on the prop and,canopy.


BTW I liked the Stuka. nice job.

Such as builds from the shelf of doom… I suppose. I have a few tarnished models that need a bit of tinkering.

Well I have had a look at the plane and I think it is time to stop.
I have covered the prop with white paint and tried to simulate some chipping with the hair spray technic.Since the white was way to bright I also gave it coat of tamiya smoke tottery and take the edge off it. I also used the white from the tamiya weathering set to go over the browns and greens to take the edge of those colors too.

On the engine exhaust, I tried to actually use RUST PAINT itself. You paint it on, wait a until it is dry, then apply the actually rusting agent to make it actually rust. It's probably something I won't do again but it was worth a try.

To simulate the smoked used Tamiya's weathering set again.

I think the technics were easier than I thought and, while there are way better modelers out there, it was easier than I thought, and darn good fun. What more can we ask for.

Im pretty happy with it for a first time.
Here I used tamiya's weathering powders for the exhaust and I found them very easy to use, and will happily use them again.

I certainly learnt a lot from this tamiya kit.
I have tried to make the white wash paint look as though its a bit older.
I also tried to apply some burnt umber to simulate fuel stains.
Over all the white was a bit too bright over the canopy so to try and dull it downs tried to apply some tamiya panel liner to take a bit of the whiteness off.

As we build things ping offers they do.Well thats what happened to the pitot tube.So it had to try and fabricate one.
So for that I took an old needle and cut it to the length needed and super glued it on.
Over all i have enjoyed this model, and it is a great model to build, and i would recommend it to anyone who wants to build an IL2.
