Hey Andrew,
The basic airfix planes like the spitfire, hawker hurricane & Stuka are great yet ideal starter sets for first airplanes

The Tamiya 1:48 Spitfires, Mustangs and Mosquitos are also great for new modellers. They litterally fall together out of the box.

I would get yourself the ME109 that is in Paul's video series and just follow what he does. It's a great kit in it's own right as well, I must have done four of them.
Regards, Dave.

For absolute novous builders I would recomend going down the Airfix road over the Eduard Me 109 one, just because the Eduard will have a lot of extra's and aftermarket thrown at it and that will complicate the build exponentially. When getting into modeling start off cheap and cheerful, that way you can build a lot without breaking the bank and getting yourself familiar with all the techniques involved in building model (aircraft) kits. I would rather invest in good tools from the start that buying expencive and complicated kits to cut your first modeling teeth on.
Damm the glue is getting to me
