German fuel drums - colour?

A quickie if I may. Is there a consensus as to what colour German fuel drums were in WWII?

I've seen a plethora of colours while searching so I'm not too sure.

you can't really go wrong on that....

I think it depends on when they were issued and what paint the field unit had available.

I've seen them in field grey, dark grey (panzer grey) and dark yellow as well as rusted and wrecked like the one in schweinhund's photo. My guess would be that they would also have been camo'd and whitewashed if the units deemed it necessary in the field as well.

Don't forget that some would still be in primer. I don't know when it started, or if the Germans did it, but around here it seems black is used on a drum to indicate it's some sort of lubricant, not fuel.

Good stuff. Thanks. I've got 6 drums which I plan to cluster together. Varying the colours seems like a good move so I think I'm going to go for a mix of fading black and grey. I'll use a lot of oils on them for rust and dirt so hopefully they'll look authentic.

Yes indeed, Tamiya. The set contained 6 drums, 2 types of jerry cans and some buckets. Its a very old set and the drums needed some TLC before they were ready for painting. I added the connectors on the side of each barrel by cutting rings from the plastic tubes that make up cotton buds. I'd seen them on other barrel sets purporting to be German barrels and the Tamiya set was missing them.
