Weathering AFV's step by step for Everyone :)

Hi All,


This is the first thread I've tried in this format, my goal is to make a serious of threads discussing how to weather or paint certain things, I no expert on weathering but hope that someone may find this useful and as long as someone comes away learning something then I'm happy. For this project we will be weathering a SD.KFZ 251/1 AUSF C Hanomag in 28mm (1/56th) by Warlord Games

the kit is very beginner friendly with few parts and manageable details, as it is for war gaming some details are omitted so some more experienced modelers may want to add these with plastic stock but for this thread we will not worry ourselves with these. In this we will cover: painting Camo (this will be part of my Krusk themed battlegroup for the game), decals and weathering and a bit of stowage. I will be my best to be as clear as possible but never be afraid to ask me if you want to know more

what I will be using:

Citadel Seraphim Sepia (to be use a filter)
Citadel Agrax Earthshade (wash)
MIG Shadow Brown Oil (pin washes)
Brunt Umber
Brunt Sienna
Tamiya Weathering Mater Set A*
Graphite Pencil
Static Grass
PVA Glue

* the pigments could be alternatively made from artist calks bought in a art shop, ground into a dust and mixed with matt varnish
* acrylic paints can be swapped with oils if you have them

So this is the first part of the project

right with so many watching eyes waiting for this its to begin,then lets us commence
with the running gear and molded on tracks:

firstly everything was primed in black, then Vallejo German C. Beige was added to the wheels and the green tone from Life Colors German Camo set 1 was painted onto one of the wheels to add some color and interest. The tacks were painted a dark brown shade and rudder track pads and wheel rims were picked out with flat black

then I began to weather the leading edges of the tracks with Vallejo oily steel

then it was on to the fun part, adding chips and scratches to the road wheels, for this I used Vallejo Grey Green, AK's chipping paint (any black brown shade will do) and also would change the shades by lightening and darkening the main colors to add visual interest to the effect. There a few different ways to this, I will be using both in this thread, and both are right depending how battered you want your model to be......personally I'm gonna weather the balls out of mine !

So for add the chips for the wheels I used a small piece of sponge cut jagged, remember you remove about 90% of the paint from the sponge as if you were doing a dry brush, in weathering subtlety is name of the game, then I an random manner steeple the the sponge on the wheel surfaces

you can then go in with a very brush to pick out further scratches if you desire, I'll being this for the wheels in the next part, but for the running gear I left it with the sponging effect. Once the paint had dried I then did a wash of Citadel Sepia to the beige parts, I went in a little heavy as I went a little mad chipping and wanted to mute the effect some what, and the tracks got a heavy wash of Citadel Earth Shade, and were allowed to dry over night

once dry everything gets a coat of matt ready for the next step....when things gets a little dirty

I think its time to do a little more wear and tear on the 251

For the front wheels, I opted to hand chip these, though this give a lot of extra control, it takes time but results in some nice effects, just take your time and keep your paint nice and thin

once happy and allowed the paint to set a sepia wash was thrown down to age the paint and make everything set down and blend together

Troop Compartment Chipping:

The troop compartment was painted with Camo Beige and the leather fittings were paint matt black though the Army painter bottle I use has more a satin finish which gives a nice realistic leather finish.

Then out came the sponge and I randomly attacked various surfaces giving plenty of attention to areas that would receive plenty of traffic from the crew or friction points

by using various tones and layering up you can achieve subtle rust effects

Another update for you,

with the wash set on the running gear and troop compartment and sealed with a coat of matt, its time to move on the next stage on how I like to weather vehicles and a new product I've picked up a while ago, AK interactive Dust Effects. It took me a while to get used to it, as it can flood detail if your not careful with it. So rule of thumb here is less is more, so first everything exposed gets a light coat of Dust before layers of mud go on. After 24 hours and a sealing coat I got a very nice effect

A pin wash of Mig's Shadow brown was added to pick out panel lines

Then came the part I love the most in weathering , adding mud For the interior mud I used Tamiya's Weathering Master Set A, it is a very handy set and i use it for all my projects.

I've got that Tamiya weathering set... I've used it once years ago. I hated the effects. But that because I had no idea how to use it.
I do now... my problem now is remembering that I have it haha.

its a handy set to have, just I wont use the applicator that is supplied in the set for anything other than wheels or large surfaces applications

I think that I'd use an old brush like you do.

its a handy jig for laying on pigment but for finer work its very hard to control,

bit of an update on the build. got a big chunk of the painting / weathering done on the kit over the night, had one of those sleepless nights so made the most of it, Ran into a few problems, especially with the decals, the kits supplied ones way too thin and rip or fold up on themselves by just looking at them so these are to be watched out for, also the GW shade (wash) I was using keeps reacting on the paint, which has never happened before, wont be using it again, didn't ruin the model but left water marks on some of the surfaces but I hope when I build up the layers of dust and mud it will be less noticeable,

ill have some pictures up soon gents

Hello Shane the GW washes are well known for leaving water marks on surfaces best used in smaller amounts and you wont have that problem.

I used on my Hellcat cockpit with no issues and removing excess before it dried.

I use their Earthshade in most builds and it goes on grand, but the sepia seems to be very bad for it

get stuck in with the painting over the last day, I wanted to try something I normally stay clear of and went with a camo scheme for my 251, I also find it a little tricky to get it right with a brush and was unsure with it until the washes went down to blend everything together

now it was down the to part of the build that prove me mental, the decals. Normally I like the markings stage of builds it signals the home stretch of a build but these were were brittle little devils that were tricky to get down without breaking or folding, but with a layer of Micro Set they conform well.

Once the decals and model were sealed with a coat of gloss in preparation for the sepia wash and oil pin washes

Also a pigment / static grass fixed with matt were applied to the running gear and wheels

I kinda motored ahead with this build over the last few days,I was a bit unsure if this build was gonna work out but i am happy with it, I know this kinda stopped being a how to, but my weathering is very basic so I hope that anyone learning how any of this useful so here is the finished model, the only thing I may add is a stretched spur antenna in the future
