1/35 Trumpeter KV-1

I've been working on this for some time...did not take any photos of the construction phase but aside from adding cast texture with Mr Surfacer and gouging up the armor plates with a soldering iron there was not much to show...a simple, very nice kit...

One thing needing aftermarket were the grills, my first attempt at this kind of PE work...good thing I wanted some damage!


I needed the Russian green color so I decided to give the Mig Ammo paints a try...also a rather weak attempt at modulation...






I experimented with a rusted steel effect on the add-on plates...just hairspray technique and some hand painting...I redid the right side as I thought this was a little unrealistic, you can see the second effort in the later photos




A shot post chipping but before rust effects, also painted the rust effect on the exhausts.


After the rust effects, Fruil tracks also assembled and burnished:



After some dust effects, exhaust staining, first stage of mud and some detail painting:





I need to do some detail touch up, additional rust to the tow cable and shackles, the tracks need mudded up, installed and that's about it...

Pressed on with the tracks...starting with a base mud color mixed from plaster, sifted earth, craft acrylics and pigments. Upper tracks have had it applied, lower tracks are bare burnished with nothing else yet. The mix was applied in a heavy but random way with a stiff stenciling brush. I did not use the vallejo dark earth here like I did on the running gear because I wanted these to remain workable.



From there just added more random pigments setting with pigment fixer, a couple different slurries of thin plaster and pigment were spattered on. AK wet effects were applied sparingly to represent wet mud.



The above steps were also applied to the outside edges of the inside tracks. The areas polished by the road wheels were rubbed with graphite from a pencil.


I added some oil/soot streaking to the side with the missing fender...think it could do with a bit more...

I still need to apply some grease/oil to the road wheel hubs, fix some little things like tweaking the rust effects in certain areas, blending some dust a bit more...
