Here is my way late entry. This my first group build or SIG. I've been wanting to try a winter camo wash and thought this would be a good reason. I've never done one before so the Hanomag should be a reasonable choice. It was cheap, it should be a quick build and the relatively simple lines of the vehicle will hopefully make the white wash as simple as possible. With a little work every few days I hope to be in by the deadline.

Here's what I started with a couple of days ago. Picked it up at Hobby Lobby for about $10 US. It's an old mold (1973) and from the looks of some of the flashy parts they have been used for a while. Of all the Tamiya kits I have built recently, the plastic on this is the worst, but still not as bad as some other brands from "back in the day". Shouldn't cause any real issues, just a little extra sanding.

I started sanding the flash off the troop seats and decided to use an aggressive grit to give them a worn look, maybe like the cords in the covers are showing through. We'll see how it turns out.

Construction of the interior and road wheel suspension. Stopped for tonight when I saw that it was time to start sanding road wheels. Maybe tomorrow night we'll get them on and start looking like a halftrack.

Road wheels going on. I noticed a couple of big sink marks right in the center of the most prominent part of the side armor panel. A couple layers of filler will hopefully make them go away.

Rear doors on. They were a little tricky but fit well once I got them figured out.

Nice start! I ordered this kit a few days ago, so I'll be following your progress

I've been working but have not had much time to post. Here are some pics of the progress. I decided to start with an early war grey scheme so on went Tamiya XF-63 German Grey.




Grey down, decals and a little weathering to show through the white wash. I sealed it with Future floor polish but I don't think I would do it again. I should have used a tougher laquer or enamel to cover the decals. You'll see why soon. I found some travel bottle hairspray for $1.37. I poured it straight into the airbrush and put it on for the chip coat without any problems.

White wash going on. Sprayed XF-2 Tamiya white. Forgot about mixing in a couple drops of buff to tone it done so later I dust coated some over the white.



Here she is. Pure as the driven snow camo.



Ready to try some brush chipping hairspray effects...or whatever its called. Lets do this!

Here is how the "good" side turned out. All the bits were knocked off by my ham handed brushing. Maybe a smaller brush next time for those delicate parts. I used a toothpick for some of the scratching. I'm not sure why, but in some places like the rear upper plate and the front wheels, the white would not scrub off. I'm not sure if the hairspray was light or the paint was heavy but I'm still happy with it.



...and the other side. The decals floated off and some were torn. I could have lived with that but the carrier fogged on the numbers. It wasn't a disaster because of the overall wear and tear look, but it did and still does irritate me. Next time I'll seal with something stronger than Future.



Tracks on and everything ready for some washing and a little touch up scratching. I need to do something to chip the wheels more.




Here is a look at the inside. I did the seats with a thinned brush coat of Tamiya XF-9 Hull Red. I was looking for a worn seat effect. The sanding scratches show through as cords might. I'll touch up with some dry brushing on the seats and try to scratch up the floor a bit.
