Airfix 1/48 Lynx HMA8

So here goes.....this is the first post in my build thread, I will be building the Airfix Lynx HMA8 in 1/48th scale. This build will be a challenge as I normally build in 1/72nd and I decided to do something different. The build will also include all of the PE from the Big ED set that I ordered along with the kit.

Initial impressions of the kit itself look good and the sprues look intact and no damage despite them all being in one big bag....the kit gives you the option of building three different versions and I really like the German navy version but as this is the FAA build I will obviously be building the Royal Navy version....I think I will but another kit and build the German version later in the year.

So some background info to start.....

The Westland Lynx is a British multi-role helicopter that has seen service in both land based Army forms, as well as ship based Naval variants. Entering service in 1977, the Lynx has seen many upgrades and improvements throughout its service history.

The Mk8 Naval variant entered service with the Royal Navy in the early 1990s and has gone on to provide them with an excellent maritime attack helicopter, performing well in the anti-submarine role, as well as search and rescue and more recently, anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia.
Equipped with a range of weapon systems from Sea Skua anti-ship missiles to the M3M .50cal heavy machine gun, the Lynx is more than adequately equipped to deal with almost any situation when patrolling the high seas. The Mk8, as well as the export 88A and 90B, all feature upgraded engines and the latest rotor technology, the CMRB blade system, giving versions an edge in both speed and manoeuvrability over their predecessors. The Lynx has been sold to numerous nations across the world making it an export success.

The Danish Navy operates them as a fisheries protection aircraft armed with a sole .50cal machine gun, these aircraft have also seen service in anti-piracy operations. The German Navy operate them in a similar manner to the Royal Navy, but with added emphasis on search and rescue.

Armament: 2 x Torpedoes or 2 x depth Charges or 2 x Sea Skua missiles or 1 x M3M .50cal HMG

Initial thoughts will be to build the aircraft with rotors and tail folded with remove before fight tags and intake covers etc...the RN version in the kit is armed with 2 x Sea Skua missiles for anti-ship operations so thats the load out ill be building.

So more progress shots....put together the sea skua missiles as building the anti surface warfare version, was in a bit of a rush and totally my fault that when the masking was removed the paint came with it so will need resanding and repainting.....the fusalage halves have been drilled and i'm getting to the stage where i will be ready to button up soon.....next up is masking using the eduard masking set which is a first for me and then get her together and see how we look......really enjoying the kit so far and just taking my time using new methods and deciphering the somewhat complicated instrustions...

So some progress on the lynx....the nose has been built and the PE added, then I moved on to buttoning up the fuselage halve....here I have encountered some fit issues and the gaps a massive on the bottom and som elarge gaps between the nose and the fuselage.....the plan is to fill these using sprue glue and i have added some bits of sprue to the bottom to attempt to get it to sit flat with the fuselage, the reason I chose this build was to challenge myself and to learn and certainly doing that so far but enjoyable none the less

Quick update....my plan with this is to build it as rotors and tail folded and to have the intakes covered and with remove before flight tags....never done intake covers before and i have used scapel blade foil glued in place and then cut to size which has given me the effect I was after and simple to do
