Ultimate washes

So after my move I got the Anniversary Luftwaffe set from Revell, no space for my Chieftain. Anyway, on using the Ultimate wash I just cannot get it to lie, it just runs off, water tension like.

I glossed the starfighter, left it a day, tried the wash and it just ran off. I had an old bashed A10 from wargaming days, glossed that and tried the same, same effect it just ran off and puddled underneath it.

Is this supposed to happen or what?

I'll start with two options:
1) decant a little of the wash into a open cup and allow some of the water to evaporate, thickening the wash and allowing it to hold better. Temperature and humidity will affect how low it has to sit, so you'll have to figure that out for yourself.
2) Try a matte or satin varnish instead of gloss. You'll have to be more careful applying the wash as it might stick to areas you don't want it.
2b) or brush on a matte or satin varnish just in the areas you want the wash effect.
