Here is my entry into this Group Build (one of many probably)

It is the Empire Captain put out by a little known company called Games Workshop

Lovely figure with great character.

I shall post this now so I don't forget for the future:

The plan for paint scheme is as follows

Armour - metal (that was difficult) slightly bronzed I think
Trousers and sleeves - maroon (light) and purple (shade)
Gun - wood
Cloak - half black and half yellow with gold lace details/ freehand
Feathers - blue and red
Boots - leather
Beard - white (he is a veteran after all)
Weapon - metal, shinny this time



Should be starting this proper at the weekend.

Just to recap:

Step 1 - Placed figure into a bath of detol and warm water for 5-10 mins

Step 2 -Cleaned model of excess resin and particles from molding process

Step 3 - Placed figure into a bath of soap and warm water for 5-10 mins to give figure a good clean to allow the basecoat to stick and look smooth

Usually that would be all this is required but in my case (rather frequent with resin figures) the hammer was misshapen/ miscast therefore I:

Step 4 - Placed figure into a bath with just hot water for 5 mins and adjusted/ bent part into the correct position, then leaved to dry.
This process softens the resin so that it can be manipulated into a new shape and will harden once dried.

After step 4, only a slight difference but at this scale it is noticeable:

In this video and in the post below I go through the basecoat process:

The paints I used were Foundation White by Vallejo, Uniform Grey by Coat d Arms and Badab Black wash by Games Workshop.

1: Mix 75% foundation white with 25% water and applied as a reasonably thick basecoat
2: Over this I added a thin layer of paint with a mix of 50% foundation white and 50% water
3: Applied a wash with badab black to the areas under shadow or recessed
4: Worked out and marked the light source
5: To the areas in shadow a layer of 50% foundation white, 25% uniform grey and 25% water was applied

The figure upon completion of step 5, you won't see much of a difference compared with step 3 but it makes a difference in the later stages. Btw the yellow dot marks the light source direction :




Next I shall post a back story for this figure set within the Warhammer universe (made up by yours truly) to bring some life to the figure and paint job

Ha ha, not sure about that. I prefer sculpting to painting but have been painting for longer than I've been building plastic plus having done fine art at school helps a bit.

Let me know what you think of the format

I'm now going to run through the next few steps, there will be allot of ratios

Colours used - Valejo German Grey, Vallejo Black, Coat d Arms Slate Grey and Uniform Grey, Vallejo Pale Sand, Vallejo Linen

Note I always thin/mix with water for figure painting. When painting with figures it is important to water down all the paint and apply in very thin almost opaque layers which build up to the solid colour. Don't be worried if you can't see the first few layers, in the end it will become solid and smooth.

Black Uniform areas:
Step 1: Layered up 25:75 German Grey and water working to a solid colour
Step 2: Added layers of 50:50 German Grey
Step 3: 25% Mix of German Grey and Black with 75% water
Step 4: 50% German Grey and Slate Grey mix with 50% water
Step 5: 50% German Grey and Uniform Grey with 50% water applied to areas 'touched' by my light source

Yellow uniform areas:
Step 6: 25:75 Pale Sand and water layered until solid
Step 7: 50:50 Linen and water
Step 8: 50:50 Pale Sand to the raised areas.

You can see why I got confused in the video, hopefully this matches with what I said

Would you guys want me to post some background to the Warhammer universe which the model is set in?

I can remember from my Warhammer days, these Empire so and so`s had loads of big guns ,steam tanks and heavy knights.
They gave my Dwarf army a run for its money (well they could'nt run that fast) anyway you can let rip with the colours on this chap.

2 more stages done today

Here I repeated steps 1-3 and 6-7 on the remainder of the unifrom and started building up the leather of the boots:



Here I have added the base layer for the remainder of the armour areas and shields, also started the gold/bronze and metallic areas on the pistol and sword oh and the remainder of the leather boots:

I can see clearly now... The rain is gone....

Wow... That just suddenly popped right out there didn't it.

Really pleased with this evenings progress

I will show you what has been achieved so far and then go through the stages I went through:



Here are the steps I took to build up the cloak:

Paints: GW/ Citadel Midnight Blue and Badab Black wash, Coat d Arms Linen, Vallejo White.

Step 1 - 50:50 layers of Midnight Blue.
Step 2 - Over this thin layers of 25:75 Midnight Blue mixed with Linen was applied.
Step 3 - To the areas under shadow 75:25 Midnight Blue was added in thin lines
Step 4 - Over step 3 the black wash was applied.
Step 5 - The shadows where covered with a single thin layer of Step 2.
Step 6 - Raised areas/ areas where light hits from the direction of light where highlighted with Midnight Blue and White which was wet blended.
Wet blending in my case is the technique of applying a layer of paint and immediately mixing/ brushing water over it to both disperse the paint slightly and blend it with the layer of colour underneath.
Step 7 - Areas where the light would be most intense where painted white.

Rather a lot of work but worth it I feel

When I first got the figure I was a bit disappointed with the detail as it was one of the first out of the molds when they switched from white metal to resin but now I'm loving it , very glad I blew off the dust and entered it into this GB

Hi Dan, ya I remember when they switched to finecast, I picked up the female Vampire Count for my ex as a mini to paint up for her, but I remember the warping, flash and bubbles.....oh the bubbles. Spent more time cleaning and filling the model than painting, but thankfully it seems GW has began to take their quality control seriously

Thank you for the walk through, just love the way you've got that cloak looking. The detail is beginning to pop too.
