German tank transporter

Post by Augustus »

How would the Germans have moved a tank, say the size/weight of Panzer IV for example, a relatively short distance by road? What I'm thinking here is like taking a prototype from a place of manufacture to a testing ground, so too far or too muck risk of damage to travel by itself.

I'm guessing trailer not towing. What trailer would they use and what would they use to pull it? And if just towed by what?

Cheers people.

Tamiya #35246

The Sd.Kfz. 9 was designed to have a towing capacity of 28 tonnes (28 long tons; 31 short tons). This was adequate for medium tanks like the Panzer IV, but two or even three or four were necessary for heavier vehicles like the Tiger I, Panther or King Tiger. It towed Sd.Anh 116 low-loader trailers to carry disabled vehicles.

Aaah, cheers guys that's exactly the type of thing I was looking for but didn't know what to search for, if that makes sense.

BNA World here has it for $200 but Hobby Link Japan for around $125 (if in stock which it seems all the things I want aren't) according to Scalemates. It'll be awhile anyway til I can get round to that project.

Yep. It's an insanely expensive kit for whatever reason.

Particularly for such old tooling.....there is a scamel with tank transporter coming soon ( British )...dearly love that....cheaper I HOPE
trumpeter has there usa version....also on my list http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/a8a5wb ... sqfsj.html $125 delivered slow boat. also the famous dragon wagon.
So for about the same price you get much better tooling and more details.....NOT German though.
However I do remember a resin kit somewhere....no doubt a second mortgage will be required.

Yeah when searching I found a couple of US ones but I am after a German one. I don't dare search for a resin kit, don't think my heart could take it!

I may even go with the Famo with the tow bar instead of the trailer, there's many photos of it towing medium tanks. Plus I'm starting to realise the size of thing, particularly as the idea that's forming is for a diorama.

But I have a couple of projects to get out of the way first so there's time to think.
