1/72 Airfix Fairey Swordfish Mk.I FAA Build 2017

My build for this theme is going to be the Fairey Swordfish Mk.I by Airfix in 1/72 scale, as in the picture below, the only problem is as i start to write this ive plowed on with the kit and not taken as many pictures as i would of liked or at stages i would of liked either i just got carried away with the build over the first few days! Below is my review of the kit, i forgot to take the pictures of the sprues out of the box, i checked with admin and this will be fine. So review first and then back to the build

The kit i was building, well thye first half at least!

I started this build by going through the sprues and priming the parts with Ultimate Grey Primer, i then decided i wanted to try black basing so I then primed the relevant areas with Vallejo Black Primer (no Ultimate available) I know, i know, not a good idea blah blah blah, but i want to try new things and this was a hot button topic not too long ago, and i wanted to see how it goes.


Yes i primed on the sprue and sometimes painted too, naughty me!

From here i started building the sub assemblies, for the first time in my return to the hobby i approached the model build differently, i did not build or paint in the order required in the instructions, instead i assembled the main components seperately so the fuselage halves were painted inside as were were others where required including the engine, cockpit, lower wings, upper wings and armaments. These would be painted, decaled,weathered and finally assembled.

To kick things of i built up and painted the cockpit, this was a basic build but with a surprising amount of details, i did not have the cockpit green No78 that airfix called for so i used Revell No 36148 thinned with Ultimate thinner, Revells paint can be VERY thick and there can be huge variation between pots in this instance i used 2 parts thinner to 1 part paint, i also replaced Humbrol No62 Leather Brown with Revell 36137 Reddish Brown. Unfortunately images of the cockpit being built and the finished cockpit were corrupted so there is nothing i can show here, the cockpit will be present in future images of this build.

This time we start on the main body work, so far the kit has been a great build and i have thoroughly enjoyed it so far, i have brush painted the colours on the interior of the Swordfish in a combo of humbrol 78 cockpit green for the ribbed areas & 61 flesh matt for the panel areas, these were left to dry before going over again and allowing to dry once more, using a sharpened piece of sprue i scratched away the paint from anywhere where there would be contact with adhesives, after a quick dry fit glue was added and tape to hold the two halves together.


The Main Body comes in three sections the two fuselage parts and a bottom panel (not shown here) the cockpit sits in the two at the designated point

The cockpit slides in from underneath.

While the two halves were drying i decided to assemble the base panel and the accompanying legs that attatch to both the base and sides of the fuselges, these were glued in place and also left to dry, at which point they would then be able to be joined to the upper half of the plane.

I decided at this point to detail the engine, at 1/72 scale i think you know i'm not going to be able to work miracles, here the piece is about as large as a thumbprint! i first primed with Vallejo black gloss and then sprayed MRP-31 chrome over the engine, i then proceeded to go around the engine and paint in the black of various points before i used Tamiya XF-28-Dark Copper to help lift the details and accenuate them, once dry a quick coat of a varnish thats friendly to metals was added, in this case i used Vallejos own water based metal varnish 77.657 Brilliant Gloss.


Here is the main radial engine after detailing by hand using a 10/0 Kolibri Golden Sable detail brush by H&S

Got to love those members´freebies. How many flight hours would it take to get one of those kits? Nice progress on the Stringbag.

Bristol Pegasus engines were, at least at that stage of the war, painted mostly a semi-gloss black.

The exhaust collector would be heat-stained stainless steel, not bright copper.
