Dragon 1/35 MBT-70

Hi ISM,

This is my first time posting my WIP here, Usually I build aircraft kits but recently I've decided to try building a tank kit after chancing upon Dragon's 1/35 MBT-70 in my local hobby shop.

Quite taken by the box art, I was not disappointed by the excellent kit quality. It's gone on pretty much problem free.

Although not really mainstream like the other tanks the MBT does have an aggressive quality on its own, being the grandfather of such pedigrees like the Abrams and Leopard 2.

I quite attracted to the shape of the turret rear. Is there something wrong with me?:huh:


Some parts I felt need modification is the simplistic engine vents and exhausts.

There is no backing for the engine fans, it's just an empty hole that has a endless chasm behind it


So I did a blanking plate

so at least it would look like there is something in there.

Next is the engine exhaust, like the engine fans there is nothing inside. even worse you can see through to the other parts that need to be hidden....

A simple solution is made by covering the vent with plaplate

And cutting out a small indentation in the sponson to fit it in.


The kit is coming together quite fast, I hope to have it done within the month or so, thanks for having a look!

how was your reaction to.... Opening the box and finding out it was basically "Empty" compared to other kits you bought in that Price range ?

Can't say I really know as I haven't bought much tank kits yet, but I felt the price was ok in my opinion.

Over the weekend I got most of the track gear done.

The running gear is unlike other normal tank kits there you plug in the suspension arms into the side of the tank.

As it has a complicated hydro pneumatic suspension it is a multi part deal that also enables you to replicate the raising and lowering of the suspension. Testament to Dragons's modern kit technology, the assembly is quite easy despite the multiple kit parts.

Also I do not know why does the instruction manual say there are 7 when there are only 6 of them...

The wheels go on and everything aligns properly, again credit to Dragons kit quality.

The barrel and mantlet is done, Dragon gives a lovely slide molded piece for the barrel. I always thought the 152mm gun has a short barrel, but its quite long for its size.

The kit is coming together quite well and fast, I admit. With any luck I hope to steamroll this kit to its conclusion!

Nice!
I just finished that kit myself. The last non-WWII vehicle I built was in 1988 I think, but I really enjoyed this one. Very unique and interesting (though failed) vehicle.
As far as the kit goes, I like the way it went together. No fit issues at all, and other than the 7 wheels in the instructions, the instructions weren't bad.
