Lysus' Robot Horse Attack Fun Time Go!

Post by Lysus »

You said robot horse, I answered. Believe it or not, Bandai has me covered:

Image

This is a High Grade Fuunsaiki...um...horse and his rider, a Master Gundam.

I never got into the series it was from, it was not the usual war drama from Gundam but instead sort of a silly series where the robots are fighting like boxers in matches. Not my cup of coffee.

Rather than build it to match the box art I'm just gonna go where my brain takes me.

For a $30 HG kit it's pretty stuffed with parts.

Image

I think I'll build them start to finish one at a time. So when I begin the horse I'll do some runner shots and likewise for the rider.

Some art from the instructions:

Image

I have an idea already and hopefully this will go together quickly enough.

That looks really cool. Certainly will be a unique project

Good news! I've done something on it. ;)

It's werid that I can't even find them on Netflix and stuff, you have to buy the physical media I guess  Interestingly the first few seasons of Sesame Street carry a warning on them that they're not for young children. Strange, eh?

I aims to please :th: Hopefully I can breeze right along with this one, I have a break coming up between terms and I intend to give you something to read while you're recuperating. :cheers2:

Right.

Started in on this one, the horsey is only two runners (and a few odd pieces on a third runner):

Image

Every part of it is basically two halves you sandwich together. So two head halves, two torso halves, and each leg has three segments for six parts and a hoof:

Image

This leads to one unfortunate problem, there's a nasty seam down the middle of EVERYTHING:

Image

Image

I gave them the "too much glue" treatment first but sadly I didn't use enough too much glue (plastic cement) so I had to resort to some Mr Dissolved Putty in some spots and Tamiya putty for the more nasty bits.

Image

I let that set up overnight then sanded them back the next day, followed by a line of Stynylrez/Ultimate primer over the seam to check if it worked. Once I was satisfied it looked ok, I primed the rest of the piece.

Image

Not perfect in all areas, but close enough for me for this project. I had to wait for some other bits to cure so I started on the rider (Master Gundam) a little in the mean time. (Forgot to grab a runner shot, I'll do that next time--oops!).

Frustratingly this too has some awful seams, rather awfully placed seams. What gets me is that both the horse and the rider have loads of lined detail where a join could be hidden but for whatever reason Bandai chose not to, opting instead of just "the middle" of every damn part. The gate placement is annoying, too. Often the gates are located in either hard to reach but prominent areas or on curves surfaces leaving you some dumb places to remove nubs. Like these shoulders:

Image

Again, the too much glue (Tamiya Plastic Cement--the orange or white bottle depending upon your part of the world):

Image

I'll come back tomorrow and sand the beaded, gooey plastic on the seam back. When it works it's great, no filling/putty needed. When it doesn't, well you get to putty the seam.

Still getting some work done here and there.

More seams on the robot:

Image

Started to fill this one on its torso when I realized it was in fact a molded detail to have a seam there. Oops. Dug out the bit I filled then primed it:

Image

Started laying down some copper on the horsey. I thought I'd see if laying down some gloss black but leaving some primer at the edges would produce some kind of neat result.

Image

Not exactly, but it was worth a shot. Gonna add some chrome to the tail and, when the time comes, a couple spots on the head:

Image

The robot's body will be Alclad Gunmetal. Added some jet exhaust to the ankle, the hoof will get Magnesium once a day goes by and I can mask off the ankles.

Image

Hope to get horsey legs put together next. Need to have the hooves and lower legs painted before I can assemble and putty up the rest of the legs to save me some painting headaches. More on that next time.

Hey, the pics are back, thanks, Imgur! I'll probably set up a Flickr eventually, but for now this will do.

The horse has a wimpy plastic hose for reigns, but I'm gonna add some heavy metal. The eye hooks are a little on the HUGE side, but they're what I had on hand so in they went. Sadly the screwing in caused my seam fixing to become undone as the bridle split again on the front. Maybe I'll fix it. Maybe.

Image

Head was painted with some copper like the body and then masked off for some contrasting metal color for the top/mane. I'm thinking some brass for the bridle and burnt iron for the barding.

The rider is slowly getting put together (as I have time to). It's all seams. Seams all the way down. Like every part. Seams seams seams seams seams...

Image

Since every leg segment had a bloody seam I assembled, sanded seams, and painted, AND gloss coated the center segments and hooves. These were masked so I could then encase them in the top leg and bottom leg parts, fill, sand, and prime without having to keep waiting for paint to dry, repose the leg and paint what I couldn't reach before.

Image

I also primed in Stynylrez black on the bottom halves and grey on the top to make some variation in the copper layer.

The legs for the rider had, wait for it, GIANT EFFING SEAMS right down the center and I was sick of them by this point. Instead of putty and sand down some curvaceous (read: problematic/tricky) surfaces I decided to try something I've been dying to do: I used my BMC chisel to score a panel line down the join on one side of each leg:

Image

Image

Got everything de-nubbed and ready for priming! Sorted into bins by their eventual color:

Image

Colors should be on by next update, hooray!
