First attempt at this- tamiya colour charts a bit dodgy but intend to to try one of the ultimate washes. What do you reckon- light or dark dirt?

I don't build planes much, but I would tend to go for the light dirt. So as to just create panel lines that can be easily seen, but not so dark to look amazingly cruddy. It isn't a tank, it moves fast and a lot of rubbish cannot stick. Closer to the engine some of the dark might be realistic....close to exhausts, gun bays and vents and perhaps behind some of the lumps and bumps on some aircraft where the air swirls. Even mixing the light and dark together to have a medium shade might be useful.

If it was me i would mix some concrete in with the dark dirt to lighten it bit and that should do you fine, you want it dark enough to be able to see it without it being too in our face.

I've not had much success with the Tamiya panel line accent-I find the X20 too harsh removing the excess-even on top of Alclad. So looking forward to a better outcome using my first wash. Is the Ultimate acrylic based btw?

Ultimate wash is clay based...just when you thought you had it sorted....

Gloss first !

What schweinhund227 said. The Ultimate clay washes were a game changer for me and aircraft. It works really well... but, gloss first!!! Looks like you got it covered, but I found out that flat paints, especially Tamiya, sucks it up like crazy and won't wipe off at all.

Are you saying the clay wash can't be removed from tamiya paint even with a good gloss coat??

NO he's saying that on matt paint the wash sticks very well

why not run a test... on some plastic... NOT your kit at first...

Use the same paints... and try a Ultimate wash on a semi gloss and then gloss protected paint and see what works for you .. and maybe run a test on untreated paints ?

Then you will have all the bases covered and know what works best for you ! (Gloss wise) it seems to be a great products for aircraft lads !

Thanks for all the advice everyone- very pleased with the ultimate wash. Special thanks to Paul for his build tutorials. It meant that this, my second novice build, was completed instead of ending up in the bin. That makes a very nice change believe me! Thanks again
