Gentlemen,
I want to build a 1/35 scale US Sherman (WWII vintage). However, no kits with 500+ parts (thinking Dragon).

What would you recommend?

really is what do you want to build.
Do you want it reasonable accurate
Do you want ds tracks or more realistic ( and durable ) types. The tracks can often be were the parts count increases dramatically. For you perhaps link and length maybe preferable....but hard to get in this scale 1/48 has them.
How much do you want to pay. You can buy cheap older kits with molded on parts, but will you be happy with the result.

Sounds Like you might prefer the Tamiya or Academy Sherman, but both have rubber band tracks.
Tasca ( now Asuka ) I think make the best Sherman.
The simplest and the oldest is Italeri , but for what you get the most over valued....It has one piece vinyl tracks
Please use scalemates to check the reviews to satisfy yourself before you buy.

Agree with Nev. Tamiya's recent Easy Eight sounds right up your alley.

Thank you. I think I will try the Tamiya kit and use the Kaizen workable track links with it.

Cost is not my concern, but rather the complexity of minute detail parts such as with a Dragon kit.

I think you made a good choice. I built the M4A3E8 last year. The engineering is outstanding. So much so, one doesn't even have to glue the upper hull to the lower and you can't even tell. Even though most people dislike the kit flexible styrene tracks (i.i., "rubber band") the ones in this kit actually look really good. I got mine just a bit too tight (the rear idlers are adjustable) and the tracks are slightly concave on the drive sprockets.
But, if you go with the Kaizen tracks, that won't be a problem. The Kaizen tracks I have used have been outstanding. With the Tamiya kit with Kaizen tracks I don't think you can go wrong.

Currently building a Tamiya 1/35 U.S. Medium Tank M4A3E8 Sherman "Easy Eight" European Theater. It is a fantastic kit. I'm not much of an armor guy and the kit just falls together. It has rubber band tracks, which I don't mind; but, some do. Other than that, it's a hoot to build.
