Using Flickr to post pictures to the forum

BobM very kindly did this short tutorial on using Flickr, Photo bucket isn't playing ball any more so i suggest using this from now on. Ive got the app on my phone to use and its free and easy to sign up for
Courtesy of BobM
Here is a quick 1, 2, 3 on my Flickr workflow.
I take most of my pictures with an iPhone. These are easily upload directly from the iOS Photos app using the "Share" button. I think this comes with iOS, but you may need to install the free Flickr app. When you upload, by default, your photos end up in two places on your Flickr account, your Camera Roll and your Photostream. There is also an option to add it to a new or existing Album. Multiple photos can be uploaded at once.
If your images are on your computer, I think you can upload using the Flickr website. Or, in my case, directly from Photos on MacOS; Flickr support is builtin to Photos via its "Share" menu item. Select one or more photo's and use either "File > Share > Flickr" from the application menu or "Share > Flickr" from the popup menu (right-click or control-click). These also go to your Flickr Camera Roll and Photostream and there is an option to add to a new or existing album.
Once uploaded I go to my desktop browser, in my case Safari on MacOS, but it works the same on Windows as I occasionally post from my work machine. There you locate you image, click on it and you'll find a sharing button in the lower right. That brings up a form with "Share", "Embed", "Email" and "BBCode". Select "BBCode". There is then a drop down to select the image size, I use "Medium" which appears to be pretty standard. There is also a text box containing all the "code" you need to copy/paste into your post. Make sure you select ALL the text. It should look like this:
Code: Select all
[url=https://flic.kr/p/V1wdUM][img]https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4278/34792805493_54c419f66b_c.jpg[/img][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/V1wdUM]Friday June 16 Live Show Update[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/147400048@N06/]Bob Mortensen[/url], on Flickr
After pasting I always make one change, I insert a return after:
and before:
so that it now looks like:
Code: Select all
[url=https://flic.kr/p/V1wdUM][img]https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4278/34792805493_54c419f66b_c.jpg[/img][/url]
[url=https://flic.kr/p/V1wdUM]Friday June 16 Live Show Update[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/147400048@N06/]Bob Mortensen[/url], on Flickr
Here is what you get from that:
Friday June 16 Live Show Update by
Bob Mortensen, on Flickr
Hmmm...

I guess that kind of turned into a full fledged tutorial! I hope this helps someone!
Keep on modeling and posting!

Thanks you Bob

You can delete the bottom url line if you don't want your name being shown at the bottom of the image. Only the first line is needed for the image.

Yes, I struggled with whether or not to include that info. I remembered reading something in the Flickr terms of service about linking back to their site and rather than risking having my account banned, I just use their defaults. But I just did some more "research" and found the
Flickr Community guidelines and
Terms of Service where it has:
Flickr Community Guidelines wrote:Link back to Flickr when you post your Flickr content elsewhere.
Flickr makes it possible to post content hosted on Flickr to other web sites. Pages on other web sites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr. This provides a way to get more information about the content and the photographer.
So removing the second line as SteelScooter suggests seems just fine to me, but leaving the first URL around the IMG is probably a good idea, plus it allows the reader to then click on the image and see the full resolution version.
Those who are switching to Flickr might just want to review the guidelines and terms of service yourselves and draw your own conclusions. For myself, I think going forward I'll be removing the second line...

Just to add to Bob's tutorial I've pulled together some screen shots to hopefully help out anyone using Flickr from a computer rather than from a phone. As with anything like this there's a number of ways to approach it but this is what works for me - one note is that I do all my editing (generally cropping and resizing) via Photoshop prior to uploading so I can't comment on the photo editing capabilities (or lack of).
In this example I'm going to walk through creating albums to organise your images, but this isn't strictly necessary. If you wanted to you could just upload images to your photo-stream and work from there, but hopefully this will help keep things organised.
After you logon you'll be presented with a screen like this one, so to upload photos click on the "Upload" icon in the top right (arrowed)
And you'll see something like this
I generally have a folder open locally and drag and drop the selected images into Flickr but you can use the selector instead to browse your files
Once you have the images you want in the Flickr uploader you have the option of adding them to an album to keep things organised by clicking on the "Add to Albums" option on the left hand panel
You'll be shown a list of your current albums so just click which one(s) you want to add the photos to - it'll show up as ticked (checked)
Alternately if this is your first album or the first time you're loading up pictures for a new project you can click "Create New Album"
Once you've entered the album name and optionally a description click "Create album" and you're taken back to the album screen
When you've finished selecting albums click on "Done" to return to the upload screen and click on the "Upload <x> Photos" icon in the top right corner
You'll be asked for confirmation that you want to upload the images so click on "Upload" when you're ready
It'll think about it for a while and look something like this
And when it's done it'll take you back to your photo-stream. You can just click on images from here to share them, but if you want to work from an album then click on the "Albums" icon
And then click on the album you want to work with - in my case the album was just off the bottom so had to scroll down to it
Then scroll down to the images you're after
And click on the image to open it up - and then to share an image click on the "Share Icon" in the bottom right
Then click on the BBCode tab and simply copy the string you're presented with
You can then paste this into your posts on the forum, and as per the discussion above I usually keep the string intact up until the first [ / u r l ] entry and then delete everything after that. You can then close the share window and move forward and backwards through the album for each image you want to work with.
There's a ton of other options in Flickr but this is by far the most frequent workflow for me. One other thing I do use is the Organizr for sorting the order of photos in albums etc so if anyone wants me to walk through that as well let me know I'll pull some more shots together.
Hope that's helpful.

Hi Scott - if the full string looks like this (without the spaces - I've added them to stop the code being interpreted)
[ url =
https://flic.kr/p/ViTwa4 ][ img ]
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4214/349 ... d9fa_b.jpg [ / img ] [ /url ] [ url =
https://flic.kr/p/ViTwa4]A10A_20170708_0152[ / url ] by [ url =
https://www.flickr.com/photos/neildavidson2/ ]Neil Davidson[ /url ], on Flickr
Then I remove everything after the first [ / url ]
[ url =
https://flic.kr/p/ViTwa4 ][ img ]
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4214/349 ... d9fa_b.jpg [ / img ] [ /url ]
[ url = https://flic.kr/p/ViTwa4]A10A_20170708_0152[ / url ] by [ url = https://www.flickr.com/photos/neildavidson2/ ]Neil Davidson[ /url ], on Flickr
So it'll look like this
[ url =
https://flic.kr/p/ViTwa4 ][ img ]
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4214/349 ... d9fa_b.jpg [ / img ] [ /url ]
Hope that helps

Cripes, that is a lot of work
I am having a hard enough time just finding all my photos on my computers to repost the threads
Someone wasn't very organized with his pictures
Thanks for showing that, now don't have to figure it all out myself

Yah it looks a bit daunting when you first start with it, but it's not too bad once you're in the swing of things. It's effectively just a scrape with the mouse (or moose) and then a frap on the delete key - making sure you didn't delete something you shouldn't have

You are not alone - it looks like I change my filing system yearly. I was looking for something from 2005 a couple of weeks back and I have no idea why I thought filing them like that was a great idea at the time!

Ok, cleaning up some posts now. When you edit your post, slap it into preview and then you can easily compare the post's extra code and see what you have to edit out and test if it still works by hitting preview again......at least that is what it does on my iPad

Yep I should've said Preview is your friend here... also quote a post from someone who has it set the way you want it to look and you can see how much of the code they used and then back out before submitting the post.

Once you get going, the pattern for editing is pretty obvious.

Glad to see everyone is figuring out Flickr and becoming BBCode experts!
I was searching for something completely unrelated to scale models the other day and came across a 2 year old post in another forum that was ruined by the PB "ransom" images. It's disgusting... It is bad enough running into old posts where the poster either deleted the linked image or no longer has an account with his host, but these are fairly rare and at last understandable. PB has single-handedly ruined a significant percentage of great internet content overnight...
Sorry for the rant, but that "felt" good.
To end on a positive, thanks to those of you that have taken the time to figure out a new way of "doing business" and fixing at least some of your old posts.

Lost as in PB wouldn't let you pull back your own photos?? Strewth!
I have to admit that 30+ years in the IT industry has left me with a healthy paranoia so I have everything on my own laptop before pushing it out to the interweb (same reason I still buy CDs I guess)

I have a question about using flickr. I read yesterday on a forum somewhere that if your using a free account then after 200 pic's those older pics become non visible. If that is so does that mean any pic's posted on the forums also become invisible ?

That's a good question, I have not seen that. Let's find out! I have 299 photos in my Flickr account. Here is the second:

Can you see it? (It is possible that I'm the only one that can see it.) It was also posted here:

If you have trouble seeing these, then we are all in trouble!
Hopefully, you saw "old" information. I believe the new limit is 1TB and as many images as you can fit in it...
