Newbie from Norfolk Uk

Post by Stevie68 »

Hi everybody,

I am a new to the model building scene, I have decided that I want to carry out model building as my primary hobby, and very soon I shall be converting my large shed into a modelling workshop. I have drawn out the lay out that I want but I am really looking for advice on the different types and amounts of paints and weathering fluids that I need as I have been looking at lots of different stockists online but there are so many to choose from. I have a budget of around £3000.00 for the paints, weathering, thinners, fillers etc. The models are on a separate budget, as I want to focus on military vehicles, aircraft and ships.
What I'm really asking is, can anyone offer a definitive list of the above paints etc that I can work with and the best place to get the best offers and deals.

I thank you all in advance for your help with this.

Hi Steve,

You've certainly got a very health budget :) What kits have you built so far?

Personally I use Tamiya and Mr Hobby acrylic paints with Mr Color levelling thinner (a 50:50 ratio). I also use CA glue as a filler and really like the Ammo by Mig range for weathering products. In terms of cement I mainly use Tamiya Extra Thin, and also the thicker 'normal' staff for specific tasks. Not sure if that helps?

An airbrush will also be a really good investment, I have a Harder and Steenbeck Ultra which I'm happy with as a beginner, but you could certainly afford to go better if you wish (an Iwata HP-C+ is on my wishlist). An airbrush will also need an compressor (I have the Sparmax ARISM, but there are better ones out there). If you get an airbrush an extractor booth and mask are musts - there is a group buy going on at the moment on a top of the range extractor, but I find my cheaper one from eBay does the job :)

Good evening gents,
Thanks for the welcome, my WIP is the USS New York, LPD-21 on a scale of 1:350 by Revell. It's an amphibious landing dock that when it was built part of the steel from the twin towers was recycled into the build. Excellent bit of kit but I have had to stop until I get my work bench sorted as the hull and super structure are fairly big so will need to be sprayed. I was thinking of getting the sparmax TC 5000 and a couple decent spray guns.

What do you think?

£3000 is a very healthy budget indeed, I returned to the hobby a little over a year ago myself. My advice take your time work out what you actually need to build a kit with the level of skill you have at present. It's all too easy to buy things you don't really need (been there done that) really think about your choices especially compressors, airbrushes, paint, booth etc.

Remember what works for someone else may not for you, as your skill level and knowledge improve expand your kit.

Above all take your time :th:
