Got some bench time today

As with most plane builds, it all starts with the cockpit

Spent today assembling and painting the ejection seat

Seat is all together, painted and dry brushed. I went away from the painting instructions and went more off the reference photos I found. The instructions call out for gunship grey on the frame and black on the seat cushion, where in all the photos, the whole seat appears black to me.

Seat has been gloss coated and is drying in prep for the 2 decals to go on it :thumb2:

Next up I will start on the cockpit tub
I have sprayed it according to the colour call out, but i have since found some reference pics where the colour is completely different :bash: :wall:

colour call out is for light gull grey, but after studing the ref pics, i think the dark ghost grey might be a better match?
What do you guys think?

Ref Pic

Cockpit tub as it stands today

Control stick and throttle

Until next time guys :cheers2:

Ok, you are on my radar and locked in :D
That thing is gonna be huge!!!
Like the black Ultimate seat, looks bad ass :thumb2: I agree with the darker grey inside
Overall, you are off to a great start

Was it the F35 that they were having trouble with oxygen levels in the cockpit and guys were blacking out??? I remember watching something about that and they MADE the airforce pull the aircraft off duty for a bit while they sorted it out
Ring any bells?? Maybe the f22??

Cheers buddy, welcome aboard.
Yep she is going to be one big Bird when she is all finished.

I'm chuffed at how the seat turned out. I was a little worried with it all being black on black, but the dark grey dry brushing really brought the details out

I thought the oxygen problem was the f-18????
The F-35 has had a lot but I don't remember hearing about that one. The ejection seat on the other hand I remember that it would possibly break the neck of pilots on the lighter end of the scale

From wiki..... an aussie f-18 lost in 91

Mystery loss of F/A-18

On this day, an F/A-18 Hornet from No 75 Squadron (A21-41, piloted by Flying Officer Cameron Conroy) went missing while returning to RAAF Base Tindal, in the Northern Territory. Conroy’s aircraft was one of a pair which earlier conducted a simulated strike on a target 290 kilometres south-west of Tindal. When Conroy failed to respond to radio calls, his wingman flew alongside and observed him slumped forward in the cockpit, having apparently suffered hypoxic hypoxia after taking off his oxygen mask. His aircraft was tracked on radar as it continued, under autopilot control, on a constant east-north-east course out over the Gulf of Carpentaria. An extensive air and sea search failed to find where A21-41 had come down after it ran out of fuel. It was not until July 1994 that a stockman discovered an aircraft crash site at Bromley Downs, 100 kilometres north-east of Weipa in far north Queensland

Nothing done today... well model wise anyways, did manage to get the brake pads changed over in my lovely partners suv :th:

Hey Guys

More bench time today... Im loving my long service leave  :th: :cheers2:

Started the weapon bays today

EPM's!!!!
Image

Not sure how to go about filling these buggers?
To be honest I'm leaning towards just leaving them so that I don't destroy and of the detail... :bash:

All the parts for one bay cleaned up and ready for primer
Image

Engine cleaned and prepped for primer
Image

All Primed also coated the cockpit tub and IP in clear so i can weather and decal
Image

While waiting for the primer to dry, I had a look at the intakes.....

Did I mention EPM's?? :wtf: :eeek:
Image
Image
Image
Image

Sanded back......
Image

Primed...... have I mentioned I love the Ultimate black Primer??
Image

Shot some Steel at the engine parts as well

That's all for tonight
Comments and criticism welcome :cheers2:

Lazy day today

Got the decal on the Ip. it is currently soaking with more mirco sol as the decal is a tad too large for the ip :wall:
Image

Got the engine colours all down and it is currently in the drying box after a gloss coat in prep for weathering. Not 100% sure how much of it will be seen, but there a few panels that you can leave open to catch sight of it after it is installed in the fuselage
Image
Image
Image

Also laid down some white on the weapon bays, sorry no photos of them they are in the drying box as well

Spectacular paint work on the engines :thumb2:

First pass through I didn't see the ejector depression marks you were talking about in the weapons bay where all the wires are running....now I see what you mean :eeek:
You could try to fill them with some Ca glue. Might take a couple of doses, but you could carefully top up the sink hole flush and then not need any sanding...just a thought

Struggling a bit with her today

Have assembled the weapon bays
Image
Image

still need to detail paint and pick out some of the detail, these are the real deal....
Image

:eeek:

Not sure how I will go trying to replicate that!

Got the ip decal snuggled down the best i could and the clear panel installed
Image

Intakes assembled
Image

Built up on of the bombs
Image

And got some panel lining done on the engine nozzle to make it look like it had been run up a few times. not going to weather the engine anymore than that as it will not been seen once installed and the fuselage closed up
Image

And finally the Landing Gear bays and legs were cleaned up dry fitted and primed
Image

Hmmm for someone struggling with their mojo today, I sure did accomplish a reasonable amount of work :wtf:

I did make a mistake with the jdams, the pe top i have put on upside down. Didnt realise until it was completely painted :bash:

Looks like it is progressing very well...you are trying to give me the fighter plane mojo again just as I have the hots for sports cars.
I think I am going to order Digger's Russian wooden plane stand soon....after the smoke clears from all the darn kits I have bought recently.

Keep up the good work bud, this will really start taking shape soon

The engine and intakes together and mounted
Image

She is up on her legs!
Image

Also testing out my home made dissolved sprue

Its a tad hard to see due to my crap lighting and the fact the melted sprue is from this kit....

As always advice and comments are welcome :cheers2:

Things have slowed a little as my long service leaves draws to a close

Got the wing nav lights painted up
Image

Silver, Tamiya's X11 from memory, on the backside and then a coat of clear red and green respectively on the top

Cockpit installed and the fuselage joined together....

She is a bit of an ugly duckling
Image
Image

Did shoot some white for the canopy hinges, refueling port and the wheel hubs through the new H&S infinity..... OMG..... the difference between a good air brush and a el cheapo Chinese special..... :eeek:   didnt get any photos though
Best $$$ ive spent so far in the hobby!

Ya all in jest my friend
Not sure why some threads get a ton of action and others nothing. This is a super build by a talented guy of a topic not often covered...so it should get looked at. I get the same feeling, both my Porsche builds are pretty :tw:
With only a couple of my regular car buddies replying
So, I just post what I post, comment on what I comment and don't worry about the views or popularity and thank the guys that do stop in and say hi

I do find the forum is waning a bit lately, maybe it is the summer, maybe it is Facebook, maybe the live show guys need to do more of their builds on the forum and not just in the chat room where most of us cannot see them. Ignoring the masses makes the masses revolt, if history has shown us anything. JMHO :shifty:

Nice bit of gooing there Mick. Go for a blast in your new car to clear that head!

I must admit to being one of the silent, perhaps majority, who look in on most things and comment on close to nowt. No comment has not meant a lack of respect or appreciation for your or others work, but of course you wouldn't know that.

Even though I've been back in the habit for a couple of years now, I'm still in awe of the work posted, and dream of getting anywhere the quality of work you and others produce.

But like you and the vast majority of folks on the site, we do it for our own reasons and satisfaction.

Keep up the great work, I for one will endeavour to be more communicative in future.

And @twokids you seldom fail to put a smile on my face with your quips and perspectives, please keep up the banter.

Sorry for hijacking your build, I'll get off the soapbox. :cheers2:

Don't have much progress to share ATM
New job with trying to get back into the swing of working after a month off hasn't left a lot of modelling time

Still working on the gaps where the wings and fuselage meet :wall:

I have the topside of the starboard wing done, but the port wing has had 3 applications of sprue goo to get it to sit proud of the gap.... touch wood anyway as the 3rd go is drying as we speak

Will upload some photos when I either figure out the iOS flicker app or crack it and get my old Samsung phone out and use that

Right I really think I need to make some time for modelling this weekend, it's a long weekend after all and while the weather is improving it not quite riding weather yet

Maybe it because I'm at the soul destroying stage of sanding down the sprue goo on the wing gaps??

Finally got the gaps in the wings sanded back

Got the canopy frame work installed

Last part of the engine primed in Ultimate gloss black in prep for metallic colours

Got the refueling doors assembled

And finally the horizontal stabilisers assembled

Didn’t get any photos tonight as I was all about actual modelling, will break out the camera and get some tomorrow and post them up.

exhaust nozzle primed in Ultimate gloss black

Refueling doors

Canopy Frame installed

And tonight I spent some time painting the nozzle
Colour call outs are flat white on the inside which i have yet to do
Gun metal on the leaves
and finally steel on the tip and in between the leaves, which i have done but on the photo its hard to see the difference between the 2 colours.
Image

I have been toying with the idea of repainting the nozzle with a lighter colour on the leaves, say tamiya's titanium gold and shooting a light coat of clear blue on the very end to show heat discolouration.......:

Not a lot of bench time this weekend

Spent what time I did have experimenting with redoing the exhaust nozzle.
Stripped it back in a bath of IPA

Primed the inside with Ultimate white
Then shot Ultimate glossy black on the exterior
Then some Tamiya titanium gold thinned 50/50 with mr hobby SLT, after hearing people rave about their results (looking at you Scott  )
finally tonight i put down some Mr Hobby steel in the tip and in between the exhaust leaves(?)

Image

Up next, hopefully tomorrow, i will shot some Alclad aqua gloss at it in prep for a panel wash

Which will hopefully clean up the paint between the leaves
Image

Thanks for looking

While that does look awesome, everything I have found online shows very little to no heat discolouration on the exhaust at all :

I couldn't find any colours I had that were even close to the metallic brown the real thing looks like, so I have taken some artistic license :ooops:

Got some modelling time this weekend while the step daughter had a friend over for a sleep over

Got the exterior canopy frame got masked and painted up, complete with finger prints on the glass

Used the medium gunship grey, model air 71.097of the interior frame work first as the canopy will be displayed open, then a coat of model Color 70.990, followed by AK ultra matt. Painted the det cord?? Model Color 70.989 sky Grey on the inside with a cocktail stick
Image
Image

Once all that was dry I cleaned up the finger prints with a q tip moistened with Tamiya x20 enamel thinner and buffed with a soft flannelette cloth

Shot some Alclad aqua gloss clear at the exhaust can and used tamiyas black panel liner once that had dried overnight
Image

Tamiya panel liner was applied to the internal stores while it was out on the bench
