Tamiya White Putty uses

Post by TheNordus »

Hello, I've had a tube of this Tamiya white putty sitting in my tools box for about a year now. I think I might have bought it to use as a modelling filler but after reading the warning slip that came with it I was too afraid to use it, I seem to remember they said it was harmful on skin or if you breathed in the odour and you should wear a full hazmat suit when using the product and then I read online that it melts the plastic and it's horrible and poisonous...
So I wanted to ask, do you guys have any experience on using Tamiya putty and what is it good for?

I use for wide gaps, it's like lacquer thinner. You won't die being near it but unlike thinner a little on your finger isn't just easily wiped away since it's a filler. It'll sit there on your skin delivering chemicals until you wash it off.

I use a glove on one hand and apply it with toothpicks.

Mostly I try plastic cement (TET), dissolved putty or Mr Surfacer, CA glue before resorting to it.

I use it quite a lot. It smells horrible. I use a clay trowel tool to apply it (available at most craft shops, it's like a spade on one end and a curved spade on the other end.) Once applied, I use a q-tip soaked in Tamiya lacquer thinner to whisk away the access.

I have tried a water based filler before but it didn't have the robustness of the Tamiya filler. Never used CA filling techniques. Mainly because I've never seen a video on how to do it correctly.

With all that said, I never saw the Tamiya stuff melt anything, but I apply it and q-tip away the access withing about 30 seconds of each other. However, I don't do much seam filling at a time because the smell is that bad. It's my least favorite stage of modelling; but, it does do its job. Hopefully I don't die young from using it.
