Newbie Advice Please - Panel Lining

Hi All

Bit of advice for a newbie if you wouldn't mind. I have just finished painting a kit and for once I am pleased with the result. I have given it a coating of Alclad 2 Lacquer Gloss Kote and I now wish to panel line it.

Can anyone give me any tips on what panel liner to use, and importantly what to use to clean it up that wont erode/attack the lacquer as I am terrified I am going to ruin it!

Just to warn you, I have read a lot of people having trouble with the Klear Kote gloss not drying and being sticky for weeks - you might want to try the Aqua Gloss from Alclad instead

I suggest Ultimate washes if you go for Aqua Gloss, they wash off with water and are dead easy I have never used them with Klear Kote so can't recommend them for that, but I wouldn't worry

Yes I have not been able to get the alclad laquer to cure properly even months later.

Also I'm not sure it works well with oil washes.

Thanks all, I heard similar about the Alclad not curing so I did three very light coats and I am going to leave it for a few days to dry properly. I may not panel wash this one, for fear of screwing it all up and learn my lesson for my next project.

You should be able to use an acrylic wash without any problems, and Ultimate

Edit: It really is worth doing a wash, its one of the parts of the modelling process that brings the model to life IMO

Agreed, give it a go on a test piece first but it's worth doing.

Water based washes on top of Aqua Gloss are virtually fool proof. Ultimate washes or artists chalks as a sludge wash work beautifully on top of aqua gloss or even on top of Klear (yes, I mean the floor polish) if you're not splashing out on bespoke products.

When I first came back to the hobby I used Klear as a gloss coat and pastel chalks for my washes. I didn't want to spend money on bespoke products before I had some idea of how to do stuff. I graduated to better products once I knew (kind of) what I was doing.

To echo Stokesy44, Alclad Aqua Gloss ALC600 is near bullet proof for weathering regardless of type of medium used once it's dry. I usually let it dry 24 hours and it'll truck anything I've thrown at it. I'm a fan of Aqua Gloss followed by decals that are sealed with Aqua Gloss then weathering. I use a lot of acrylic washes and the ALC600 never lets me down. I've used lacquers over ALC600 as well and its handled it like a champ.

However, it can be a bit of a pain to get the ALC600 to completely coat something (you almost need a complete looking coat over the model for it to really be coated.) It can pool/run rather easily. So you may need to coat something 2 or 3 times. HOWEVER, if ALC600 does run, I use a wet q-tip and wisk away the run. This technique has always worked for me. YMMV but I've had excellent luck with it. If it does run, I get the q-tip wet, and roll it across the runnage area until I can't see white anymore (it makes a milky white appearance when it runs.)
