Ultimate hands down.

Often use Ultimate primers as a final colour
The fine white Tamiya primer in spray can is good but it is stinky! and no match for airbrushing Ultimate
But if you don't have an airbrush Tamiya is ok
Ultimate does actually dry brush pretty well also

As scott said. If you have access to an airbrush. ... Ultimate hands down.
If you don't then tamiya rattle packs are great

Got to say Ultimate, easy for me to say but i was using Badger primer for over a year before we had it relabelled. Its by far the best primer out there, badger well and truly knocked it out the park with this stuff.

I started out with Tamiya primer, and it's pretty good. But after I tried Stynylrez/Ultimate there was no contest. There's no thinning needed, it cleans up easily, hardly any stench, and it levels out nicely. The black in particular is awesome as a color in its own right.

As Scott said the rattle cans are good if you don't have an airbrush but they require some care during application. I still keep a supply around for when I just need to prime one part and don't want to clean an airbrush (I can be lazy).

If you have an airbrush then the Ultimate stuff is the way to go.

Anytime I airbrush I don't stink out the joint even with volatile paints (laquers or whatever you want to call them)
When you use a spray can, there is VERY little control of paint and aerosol coming out of that sucker...and most seems to go right into my lungs
So although spray cans are ok, they are soooo poor compared to airbrushing. It has taken me two years to really realize that and my big wall was getting over stripping and cleaning the brush. Once I got that figured out, I love my airbrushes and so Ultimate primer took over

I would use a gas mask for spray cans and use them outside i.e. the Tamiya fine white.
The two part clears are tempting to me as well, but not sure I want to deal with their smell and toxicity

Yes, speaking of smarty smart guys, I forgot to mention I only use the cans outside. They blast out a lot of fumes along with the paint.

I'm with you on the 2k; so tempted but the toxicity bit gives me pause.

Agree with Paul, Badger (the org product is called Stynylrez) / Ultimate just found a fantastic formula.
There are many good primers (feels like I have tried them all) but Badger/Ultimate is overall best in my book.
I think its two things, the ease of use combined with the guaranteed end result. You cannot fail. Many other primers also produces good results but needs some work and getting use to before You get there.
I have tested and however You chuck it on it just levels out and leaves a beautiful surface and also dries fast and is strong.
Its just a great product that takes away the fear and hassle of using a water based acrylic primer as an alternative to solvent based stuff.

All the main points have already been touched on: ease of use, ease of clean up, smell, etc.
One additional point: local prices will vary, but a Tamiya can of primer is 7-8 dollars around here, which will do two to two-and-a-half 1/35 tanks. The smallest Ultimate/Stynylrez bottle is a fraction more but will do 15 to 20 1/35 tanks, if not more.
