Are there any instructions out there on how to build a good spray booth, for someone like myself returning to scale modelling.

It depends on your "level" of DIY and how much money you want to put into it.

I made one myself using a 40£ kitchen extractor hood from IKEA. It work great, but the noiselevel is a bit higher than you can get from a professional built spraybooth using high quality industrial fans.

I got a big furnace fan from the recycling centre one weekend with the intention of using it for a blower
Still might make a larger spray booth for the wood shop, but bought one of the UK ones all the guys have on the ISM group buy and don't regret it at all.

Be careful with your fans guys as they should be sealed and protected from fumes so you don't start a fire. Squirrel cage fan is the safest where the air does not pass directly through the motor.

I'm told Ikea has a suitable blower in there kitchen rangehood....fume extractor.

Thank you for the weblinks to the YouTube videos, looks like I have cut out and looks like a building project in itself, looks like I will have to make a to IKEA, in the mean time will have to improvise.

This also looks like a good option and the instructions look simple enough and easy to follow.

Thought I would bring this post back from the dead.

I just finished cutting all the pieces out for the spray booth. I am going to go ultra cheap on the air extractor and just use a bathroom vent. They don't pull as much air as the one in the link but the bathroom vent is only $15 compared to nearly $100 for the other. I will change over the blower fan down the road but I just wanted to get this project going. Bathroom Vent

As for lighting I think I am going to try some LED under cabinet lights like these LED under cabinet lights. It says that three of them puts out 1000 lumins. I feel like I could just use 2 and be fine.


I will post photos when the booth is finished but thought I would bring this post back to the top if anyone is looking for DIY spray booth info.

So the spray booth is together. What an easy and well designed build. Instead of putting plexi-glass on top I had a piece of scrap opaque vinyl that I stapled up there. I figure I can put some lights on top of it and it will make a nice soft diffuse light when I am working. The wood I had was some scrap from a cabinet job so the total cost for me was $24.83 and thats because I wanted to add a switch My dad was digging around his shop and found an old heater blower that he is going to send me to replace the bathroom vent but for now this works fine. I still have to add the ducting tube but I won't be painting for a few weeks anyways.

It puts out more CFM's than the el-chepo exhaust fan but not as good as the industrial grade one I want to get. It works though, I pulled the hose off the back to check and there is a tiny bit of overspray in there where my filter isn't perfectly sealed.

It looks to be more than up to the task. It's a furnace blower isn't it ?
It might pay to build a noise reducing cover over it and line it with some noise reducing material.
