Global Scale Modeller

So being off the hobby for some years i'm now back in force.

I had this Tamiya kit bouth some time ago the Bf109 E3 and i'm slowly getting it done i was just dry fitting when i noticed something.

Now my problem is with the engine cover:

See A10 the engine cover, now when is assembled in the fuselage has these two openings i guess for refrigeration of the engine, and you can clearly see the inside:

on the tamiya manual theres no painting instructions at all, it should be the engine right so i should paint it black and drybrush alluminium?

or paint it gunmetal, or rlm02? rml66?

Also another question on the nose machineguns, i plan to replace those with some Master metal barrels and i'd like to have them already painted when mounting the engine cover, how do you guys suggest that i mask them without ripping them off after painting?

or due to the bad location should i just paint everything and then just wing it with a brush to paint them gunmetal?

The Eduard E-3 instructions have the engine painted in Mr Metal Color Dark Iron so I would go with the equivalent in the paint you are using

so being a bit anal about this stuff i started trying to mask them,i painted the radiadors with vallejo metal aluminium colour and dark wash from Mig.

sadly i dropped my tamiya extra thin glue to the floor, and that ended the session, i now have to clean everything

slow progress

was using those da vinci brushes for wash duty, they are awfull avoid them if you can, need to buy good brushes

plane is now primed with vallejo grey primer.

having lots of problems with this primer on PE and metal it just comes off, on plastic if you use a scriber or sander it flakes off

going to try to get Ultimate primer for my next build.

things went a bit south, using vallejo air black with flow improver, airbursh kept getting clogged in the tip.

i could not spray for more then 2 seconds without having to clear the tip, i then proceeded to thin the paint more as you can see in some splutters, but even so the airbrush kept clogging i dont understand, it got to the point where it was too thin already and it kept clogging the needle.

started at 24 psi, tryed 20 to 30 psi to see if the clogging stopped but to no avail.

i have been out of the hobby for a while and im sure im very rusty, but ive never had so many problems with mr.colour and tamiya paints on the airbursh.

Really having lots of problems with Vallejo, i wanted to start using healthier paints

Damn! The Styrene Gods are out for your blood, I'd say. Tons of bad luck with this build.

What make and model airbrush are you using? Just curious.

As of right now I use Tamiya paints exclusively. I only have to wipe the tip of the nozzle after every session, not really a problem. I'd say for your next build to buy Tamiya paints. Tamiya has never let me down. I thought about getting AK Interactive paints but they're more expensive. You really can't beat Tamiya for the price, at least in the States.

can't understand what happened, maybe i didnt shake the paint bottle properly, i did stir it a bit outside the bottle with flow improver but maybe it was not energetic enough

didn't have this problem with the rlm 02, rlm 66 and primer that i already used so can't understatnd what happened, it just clogged

goint to try to find an electric paint mixer and some more testing, i might have not shaken it enough.

much more control as you can see in this old testing kit, even so it was a bit rebel and sometimes clogged, as i had no problems with the RLM02 vallejo model air it leads me to believe that i might have a defective model air black bottle

now first boring mistake, so tamiya says to paint the propeller black but techmod on the same model says to paint it RLM70, so im going to paint it this colour, the mistake was that i primed it black, and now the RLM70 tone is very hard to show, its the second time i paint it with several light layers but its still not showing properly

spinner & props look green to me! It is meant to be 'black green' after all, so it would be dark.

the aqua gloss left a rough surface i have found several people on the internet complaining about it, must have been lack of pressure maybe?

is there some failsafe varnishes one can use like the Ultimate primers? self levelling and easy to apply?

so i tried to sand it a bit with 2000 grit tamiya foam, some of the surface is better but then made a mess and got it dirty (foam was not wet shoud it be?) so after a lot of fussing i got it sort of cleaned again, here he is:

tamiya decals are too thick don't know what else to do with them, these have several microsol and tamiya fit strong treatment applied and still they keep thick as new

Coming together very nicely

so my gloss coat saga continues.

im now starting to get the hang of X-22 but i need more experience, the model surface is all messed up now with all the products and experiencies i have been applying.
I managed finally to get at least the start of the wet look, but its still far from perfect.

i got some varnish on one of my fingers on the glove and managed to scrap a decal with it the right fuselage Balkenkreuz i retouched it with a brush and some white and black paints

this model suffered a lot, i used a lot of techniques and products trying to fine tune the ones im going to use the most lots and lots of mistakes but i hope the next one is going to be a little better.
