Which filler?

Hey guys

I've run out of filler (I used Squadrons green putty) and need to restock in it as although I don't use It too much it's always handy to have some around.

However I'm at a loss as to what filler to use. Humbrol is probably the most accessable for me to buy but I had problems with there old formula.

What other fillers that are affordable and non-toxic would you recommend ?? Thanks

For myself, I use Vallejo's filler which is great it applies easy and you can fill a gap then while it off smooth using a moist cotton bud or allow it to dry in which it sands easy. ive been using it for over two years without a problem.

Recently I stated using deluxe materials perfect plastic putty' which works exactly like Vallejo's filler but with less shrinkage.

I think they are about the same price, but for me I would try the deluxe materials one.

I can't stand the humbrol filler at all, and only use squadron green for larger gaps.

If it would be of help I could do a review of different types of filler? Be it a video or photo review.

EModels stock both, the Vallejo is half the price of the deluxe materials one.

I don't use the Vallejo putty, find it far too soft and get too much shrinkage. I've always used white stuff and Mr Surfacer 500 as a two part fill, works perfectly. Although, just lately I've been using perfect plastic putty and it's ace

Not trying to make your day harder... but have you ever tried to use Styrene ?

either rods or filaments (stretch sprue) to fill your gaps ? its free and it won't shrink !

in a bind it works well!

I also use Tamiya Grey putty and smooth it with their own brand of Lacquer thinner and works wonders

Yeah that's a good way to fill gaps, I've used strips of plasticard to fill large seams before.

Video is uploading as I speak ill post it up once its done, be prepared as its got 35 mins of me waffling about fillers and that's only part 1

Yeah I use Vallejos Plastic Putty now as well. I have found that if you do want to sand it, let it dry for a good while (at least a day or so) as if not it doesn't sand very well, the sanding just basically pulls it apart. I have found that it doesn't shrink too much, nothing a quick second pass can't cure if needs be.

Cheers for the great advice guys I'll look into it unfortunately I live in the deep dark depths of Cornwall and there's very few model shops around, one sells RC kits and a few big Dragon 1/35 kits and there's a hobbycraft which stocks Airfix, Humbrol and Tamiya products. However stock in these shops varies and is usually limited meaning I rely on going to Exeter to pick stuff up or wherever I am on holiday in the Summer/Autumn

I don´t have to use filler very often, i´m glad about it because i hate filling and sanding.
usually i need some tiny amounts of filler on my figures, i use Milliput there which is great stuff in my opinion.
Apart from that i use Revell filler from time to time, its not bad either.

Well guys it seems that the higher powers are watching this forum as I have just heard a new model shop is opening very close to where I live, a proper model shop! Not only shall it have the normal Airfix Tamiya etc but also Miniart figures and the like along with the Vallejo range My problems seemed to be answered!

Great question. And Paul! I would love to see a video comparing the putty's and the two part ones as well such as Aves if you can get that in the UK. I would have no idea on shrinkage and to be honest the whole point is to fill a gap once without shrinkage I would think. Hope you get around to doing a video please.

I haven't seen aves over here jim? I will do a follow up video on these at some point

Im using squadron white putty but I find it doesn't spread very well so i'm changing to either vallejo or deluxe materials.

Deluxe Materials is by far the best all round putty now

I'm using Revell Plasto putty. Very good one. Revell is making a lot of good quality products for our needs.

I have heard of folks using Super Glue as a filler as it dries quick and does not shrink, does anyone have experience to share about that? I have looked here but not yet found anything about this.

Is one type of CR glue better than another for this?
