Well, now that I've got Flickr sorted out, here is the Wingnut Wings 1/32 Sopwith Camel. It's been a fun but at times frustrating adventure building this one. Here are some thoughts:

It's a WNW kit. So the presentation as always is special. The book is well put together and is an adventure in history. That being said, the kit does have a couple of minor flaws. Mainly this comes from a couple of nitpicks:

1. There are injector pin marks on the inside of the fuse. Now that being said, they can't be seen. But being this is from WNW this was unexpected.
2. The fit is tight in several spots. Mainly the joint of the fuse to the wing and the Horizontal stabilizer to the fuse. When I first dry fit the stab, it cracked my puttywork on the fuse sides and I spent some time reputtying, sanding, masking and repainting the seam. It worked out. But it is something to be aware of.

3. The struts are pretty flimsy in this build. Particularly the cabane struts in the middle. The dihedral in the bottom wing complicates the gluing process. So be careful and take your time here.

4.Otherwise it's another typical kit from WNW.

5.I painted it with MR. Color and Tamiya paints.

6.I used nylon thread instead of EZ line and it seemed easier to me to work with. This includes all the internal rigging as well.

7.Be very careful and take your time gluing the control horns to the control surfaces. They are tiny and a major pain in the rear. Make sure the glue is set fully before attaching the rigging.

8.Tape lines were done with Tamiya Smoke.

9.I mentioned on facebook that part A56 is a bit difficult. ITs the piece glued to the rigging near the machine guns. Glue the rigging while it's still on the runner and it's much easier to deal with.

10.Decals were fantastic as usual.

11. Wood effects were done by streaking brown enamel over Mr. Color Sandy Brown. Mr. Color clear yellow was applied next. The final step was a clear coat of Tamiya clear mixed with Mr. Color leveling thinner at a 50/50 ratio. On the fuselage wood grain, I also painted Tamiya smoke to add some accents.

In conclusion, I don't recommend this as a first WNW build. It fits well, but it's tricky in spots and at times was killing my mojo. It really tried my patience at times. That being said, it's a rewarding project if you are patient with it. I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

I keep saying it but I must give one of these kits a try very soon. I only live a couple of hours drive from the museum that Peter Jackson build to house his collection of WW1 planes. you may have just grabed my interest.

They take a certain amount of patience and attention to detail. But they are so worth it. I hope you will give them a shot. I've built four of them and have enjoyed every kit. This one was a little frustrating at times. But it's a rewarding project.

The easiest one of the four I've built was probably the Pfalz D.IIIa. However, it does cover the bottom wing entirely with a decal sheet. That puts some guys off to building these. I didn't have any problems with it. The decals are wonderful in these kits to begin with. I've never built it, but the Fokker D VII has very little rigging and might be a good place to start. I built the Rumpler C IV early as my first attempt and enjoyed it thoroughly. The Camel is a good kit. It's just a little frustrating in a couple of spots. The fit is overly tight near the wing root as well as the stab and the struts are flimsy. Regardless of which one you choose, patience is needed with rigging in these. My favorite is still the Salmson I built last year. It might be my favorite build ever and I have been doing this for the better part of 30 years. But the rigging is a pain on that one. Lot's of double lines. The main thing is, which ever WNW kit you are building, you have to really think through and plan how you are going to build it. They are a blast though.
