Global Scale Modeller

Ok, so you're building a smallish diorama/vignette and most of the surface is going to be dry earth/dirt/soil.
What do you use? Do you go for the diorama paste type stuff you get from companies like AK-I and Tamiya, or, do you go down the flock type route from people like Woodland Scenics.

I don't want to use real dirt so was just wondering what you guys use,

I've been using vallejo diorama paste for the last few of my dioramas and it works rather wonderfully. I've also used tile grout mixed with paint to create a ground texture which I think works rather well.

I do a pigment mix with plaster. Then once dry add more pigment shades on top.

I looked at the Vallejo stuff but wasn't sure if I liked the colour or not, I realise that you can add to the colour but apart from their actual acrylic paints I've been let down by a couple of Vallejo products.

Hi Nev, I've used similar, like plaster, wall filler, clay etc but as this is only going to be a small job I thought just something straight out of the bottle.
I actually found later that I had some Tamiya Soil Effect stuff which isn't too bad, but the colour is a bit lighter what I wanted.

Anyway, I've opted for some of the AK stuff, I've just similar products from them with good effect. I now see that since I last looked Ammo by Mig have now brought out their range too. These two companies are always very close (for obvious reasons) but I normally find the AK stuff slightly better quality. Anyone else noticed how the names rub off of Ammo stuff, don't matter if it's acrylic paint or enamel wash.

I like the Mig mud effects, use them on tracks and on the hull. So expensive though I couldn’t afford to use on bases. Suppose if only a little one would be ok.
