Replacing missing pieces??

Post by PelicanJoe »

This is my first post. Quick intro: got back into scale modelling a few years back after I had kids. Needed a hobby for those nights after they went to bed. My main area of interest is 1/48 scale US military aircraft. I built about 8 kits or so and then took a break for a couple of years. Recently, we adopted a new kitten and one day he sent a bunch of CD's crashing down on my planes. Damage wasn't as bad as it could have been, but repairing the broken models has gotten me back into scale modelling.

Anyway...I have a couple of repaired kits that are now missing pieces. I have no idea where they went. I imagine our cat scattered some of them in the basement after they ended up on the floor.

Guess I'm looking for advice on how I go about looking for replacement parts. I'm missing, for instance, the canopy on a 1/48 F-4 Phantom and also a 1/48 F-105. The phantom is also missing an engine.

I've tried looking for aftermarket parts - but can't seem to find any. Is there a source for aftermarket canopies? Is my only/best option just looking for a kit online and scavenging what I need?

Thanks!

If you know the brand and kit number it is sometimes possible to order the parts from the original manufacturer.
Otherwise canopies can also sometimes be had from aftermarket specialists. You will have to look hard as each one will often only a set range of a certain aircraft....so you have to check each one.
It would be really helpful if you could identify what brand and possibly a kit number as a number of kits can also be retooled from the same manufacturer and parts between them may not fit if the original kit was way out of spec.
Use https://www.scalemates.com/search.php?f ... -4+phantom** as a starting point. But this maybe the one

Specifically, I'm looking for a:

1) Canopy, engine, and front seat for the Revell F-4 Phantom C/D (#04583)
2) Canopy for the Revell F-105 Thunderchief "Wild Weasel" (#04504)

I'm willing to modify if I can't find exact matches.

Revell does have a part request form. I submitted - so guess I'll sit back and see what happens.
