Aur0ra145's Academy 1/48 Polikarpov I-16 Type 24

Post by aur0ra145 »

Howdy all!

Found this kit on the cheap so I figured I'd take part in the SiG fun!

At first glance the kit looks incredibly simple. No flashing which is a plus and decent detail on the parts. Should end up being a rather quick build as the part count is rather low.

Fortunately the local museum has an airworthy one, so I'll be using it for most reference things.

Got a bit more work done.

This kit leaves a bit to be desired. The wings have huge gaps that require quite a bit of filling. Rest of it goes together pretty easily. Priming and painting should be just around the corner.

How cool to have seen one up close. Only ever had a little toy myself.

Bit more progress. The detail in this model is severely lacking. Painted the exhaust, turned out better than I thought because it was all with a tiny brush. Generally I'm bad at that small of a detail. The matte black/rlm80/whatever is much more black than I wanted; but, it's what the color call outs wanted. I think it may suffer from scale effect or I should have used Tamiya Rubber Black vice the nearly true black vallejo model air.

The humps on the nose for the machine guns are off/wrong. Mainly from me and little bit from the instructions not being clear and the panels not matching up with were the guns are placed. The prop also is supposed to be semi-gloss. I sprayed it with aqua gloss to try and help out the scale effect. This is raised panel lines on the wings but recessed on the cowl. Which is weird. So decaling will take a lot of Mirosol/set. Even in a 1/48 scale this plane acts like a 1/72.
