This will be my second in progress.

Unfortunately, I have to tell you, I am working on the tank for some time and therefore I can’t show the assembly. Sorry!

Why do I make a progress? Schoof and I are working on very similar projects. Instead of a KV-1 he used a T-34/85, incidentally he makes it very good! Check it out!
We both want to help us a little on the figures. But I do not want to post my pictures in his topic. My aim is not to make a competition who is as far or what looks better.

Please be also honest, with your opinion about my kits. Criticism is welcome as long as it is constructive.

Construction could take a little longer, because I have no experience with figures. Also, I would like to build a small base, I've also never done. By the way I also try to be a father and husband. I even have to work ... Puh!!! Too much to do ...

The KV-1S/85 was a Soviet heavy tank in World War II. In contrast to the KV-1 the KV-1S/85 received a 85-mm gun, which was derived from an anti-aircraft gun. Only a few were built. The performance data were similar to those of the T-34/85 - only the latter was faster but the KV-1S/85 was much more heavily armored.

Trying to install the 85-mm gun in a tank, already took place in 1939. However, development of a special tank for the gun was too expensive. With the emergence of the new German Tiger and Panther this development was taken by the Soviets in 1943 again. The main problem was the construction of a suitable gun. Any suitable proposals had a muzzle brake that was not accepted by the Soviet leadership, as they reduced the power of the gun.

With the release of the D-5T the construction with an appropriate tank could be started. Since the war was already far advanced less time in the development of a new tank could spent. Therefore they decided to install the 85-mm D-5T in the turret of the KV-1 and in the new developed IS-1. This was possible because the dimensions of the D-5T allowed the installation without any major modifications. Only the slewing ring had to be extended and the space for the radio operator in the interior fell off. Big problems with the serial production of the D-5T prevented mass production of KV-1S/85 and IS-1. When the gun finally stood in sufficient quantity, it was decided to incorporate the gun from now on in the new T-34/85.

I have painted the entire hull with my airbrush.
Then I mounted the tracks.Last I will paint them with a brush. I know it is not the best way...

I've seen your problem with the tracks.But I think you get the problem solved well.
As you have also solved the issue with the suspension...

Russian Army

During WW2, the Russian Armed Forces consisted of five main elements:
Ground Forces, Navy, Air Force, National Air Defense and Armed Forces Support.

The Ground Forces represented about 80% of the total manpower, being the largest in strength. It had approximately 5.300.000 military effectives at the outbreak of the Russo-German War in June 1941. However, devastating damage brought by the German Mechanized Forces resulted in more than 70% losses of its entire troop strength within five months. This led to a rapid reorganization of the Ground Forces, and with a help of the harsh winter climate of Russia, they managed to repel German’s advance just in front of Moscow. Due to the heavy losses, reorganized units became much smaller than before. The infantry reduced their divisional strength from 14.483 to 10.859. Tank Divisions, which had possessed some 20.000 armored vehicles, lost about 70% of them at the initial stage of the war. Most surviving Tank Divisions were disbanded, and the available tanks and crews were re-assigned to much smaller units like independent tank battalions or tank brigades. It was in 1945, just in prior to the end of the conflict, that the Russian Armed Forces recuperated the pre-war- level of their strength.

The main strength of the Russian counter-offensive was their tank troops. Following concentrated fire by their artillery units, the tank troops advanced in three groups, and many infantrymen rode on the tanks of the 2nd and 3rd groups. This infantry practice was unique to Russian tactics and was called “Tankoviy Desant” by the Russians. Since the Russian Ground Forces did not possess armored troop carriers like the German halftracks, an infantry battalion called the “Motor Rifle Unit” was attached to every tank brigade and assigned to close support the tanks. A Motor Rifle Unit consisted of about 500 infantrymen. Once encountering an enemy’s position, infantrymen would disembark from the tank, attack the position, and return to the tank. These infantrymen were spearheads of the attack, and due to the enemy’s defensive fire, liable to sustain heavy casualties. (Tamiya)

I like to put them on last (and discover that they don't fit )
But maybe you like it better to put then on from the start. ..

It's mostly a personal taste thing Easy8. I myself will try to leave them off along with the wheels until I'm done painting. I find it easier.
For some modellers it's easier with them on.
I would suggest trying one build with them on and one off and see which one you are most comfortable with.

There is no reason to apologize.
I have not seen this as a criticism.Besides I've also asked to criticism if necessary.
I've never tried to mount my tracks afterwards but I will try this on my next kit.

There is a little update about my soldiers.

The set of Russian soldiers is known a bit dated but I think it still very good. I like the poses of the soldiers, and they can upgrade a tank extremely.

I have painted my figures with the following colors:
Revell 82 dark earth for Coats and Hats
Revell 87 earth colors for the uniforms
Revell 85 Brown for the leather parts
Revell 385 Wood Brown for Pouch and Bag
Revell Anthracite 9 for Boots

The weapons, are not here to see, painted with:
50% 9 Revell Anthracite + 50% Revell 91 iron for the metal parts
Revell 84 leather brown for the wooden parts

All figures are coated with a thin layer 2 Revell clear varnish to cover shiny spots.
Badges and medals are painted with oil paints after Washing.

Thanks to a small medical operation I have more time for tinkering now.

No, no, no! No need for compassion ....

The Tank from Trumpeter is made of best quality. All parts fit great and are well detailed. There are individual track links, photo-etched parts, an aluminum barrel for the gun and copper wire for the tow cables are also available.

The whole kit was primed after assembly in burnt umber. Following the whole model was airbrushed in Russian green. Large flat surfaces have been brightened up with olive drab to show light weathering. Edges were dry brushed with a mix oil paints
(50% brown + 50% ocher).
Also some traces of oil and rust were displayed with diluted oil paint.

Next comes the Chipping and further processing of the lower hull.

Nice work! I have the Tamiya KV-1 in the stash. Been in there so long that I have sort of forgotten about it. This thread is helping to spark some interest in building it sometime.

I need your help!

I can’t decide myself how to position my soldiers on the tank ...
Left and right on the fenders or on the engine compartment cover?
If I positioned the figures behind they had cover by the turret but they would sit next to the exhaust pipes (Lots of protection but exhaust gases).
Left and right of the turret means no fumes, no cover and less heat from the engine. It may be cold in the east…

If you've seen some of the pictures from the period, the mounted infantry mostly road behind the turret holding on for dear life until they reached their goal, then they dismounted. Hopefully without getting run over. I doubt that they even knew that exhaust from the tank was bad for you.
If they did, they probably were told... Too bad. Very though people. Safety and comfort weren't really given consideration by the officers and designers.

Yeah I'm with Coen, stick them as they are in the first picture there. Better cover, and a bigger space to stand on. I am sure many a Russian soldier got slight burns from hot tank exhausts, and I am sure that was the least of their worries!

Crap! I ruined my first base ...

I used gypsum as foundation and let it dry for 24 hours.As upper material I used a mixture of white glue, silt and sand. I have diluted it using very little water.Unfortunately, the gypsum took to the water and was then crumbly.
All ended up in the trash.
In the second attempt I left off the foundation and used less water.
Wish me luck...

Today I have better weather to make pictures and I have time because it is a public holiday in Germany (Day of German Unity).
Because it is my first base I have kept simple.

Not all faces have I succeeded and unfortunately there are two flaws on the base...
